The recent adaptation of Moll Flanders for Masterpiece Theater is a book-lover’s dream: the dialogue and scene arrangement are close enough to allow the viewer to follow along in the book. The liberties taken with the tale are few (some years of childhood between the gypsies and the wealthy family tree are elided; Moll is Moll throughout the tale, rather than Mrs. Betty; Robert becomes Rowland, etc.) and the sets avoid the careless anachronism of the movie version unrestricted earlier this year.
The breasts, raised skirts, tumbling hair and heavy breathing on the tiny screen might catch you by surprise if you don’t read the book carefully (as might Moll’s abandonment of her children on more than one occasion). Unlike his near-contemporary John Cleland (_Fanny Hill_), Defoe was trying to keep out of jail, and so didn’t dwell on the details of “correspondence” between Moll and her varied lovers. But on the page and on the screen, Moll comes across reasonably clearly as a woman who might bend, but refuses to break, and who is intent on having as excellent a life as she can get.
E. M. Forster in Aspects of the Novel considers Moll and her creator’s art in some detail. While he finds much to criticize in Defoe’s ability to plot (where did persons last two children go, anyway?), he is as besotted with Moll as I am. Immoral? Sure — but immortal, and never, ever dull. We hope at least a few of the viewers of the recent adaptation take a couple hours to learn the original, unique Moll Flanders.

I expected a lot from this book.I was very disappointed.And to reflect I read it to the last letter.Sure,it speaks about about the fate of a woman in the 18th cenetury,a very rare thing in persons times,because nobody cared about poor women or independent women(a ridiculous notion then)or “terrible” women and why they became terrible.But,it is not excellent literature.Nearly half of it is an inventory of the things she (Mall)stole,robbed,cheated … If it were a 150 pages shorter,it would have been a much better book.Save your time and energy for a much better book,and there are many of persons!

This book has the honor of being one of only two books that I have ever read that I TRULY regret having wasted my time on. I really and truly did not reflect that I would be able to end this one BUT I ALWAYS end a book once I start it. In my opinion this is one of persons cases when a very controversial novel gets confused with a fantastic novel. I am but VERY grateful that I selected it up at a library sale for only 50 cents.

I had to read this for a book club, and a fifth of the way into it, I started to wish I were blind, so I wouldn’t have to continue. I considered gouging my eyes out with a grapefruit spoon. And if a name tried to read aloud it to me, I was prepared to pour hot parrafin into my ears. And if Anne Sullivan tried to sign “Moll Flanders” into my hand, I would dig into my wrists and sever the nerves to my hand with a carpet knife. Then if a name tried to tap the text of this book onto my back using Morse Code, I would be left with no course of action additional than suicide. As it was, I concluded my book club obligation, and as soon as we’re done discussing this, I’m going to bandsaw open my cranium, locate the part of the brain that remembers I read this book, and scoop it out with a melonballer. Wish me luck!

“Moll Flanders” is the tale of a girl who was born in a prison. Through out Moll’s youth she is determined to become a respectable and self sufficient woman. In effort to avoid apt a servent she starts stealing to assure her independents. Over all the tale is intriguing, but is hard to stay interested in due to the redundancy of themes (failed marriages, greed, deceit,etc.).
