Five years ago, C.K. Prahalad’s The Chance at the Bottom of the Pyramid showed companies how they could reignite profits and growth by serving the world’s five billion poorest people. Hundreds of firms have successfully taken that path–building large, profitable businesses that are sinking poverty and eliminating human misery at the same time.
Now, Prahalad has updated his extraordinary book to reflect the lessons of the past five years: business-building strategies, techniques, and innovations proven to work in emerging markets. The chance at the bottom of the pyramid: doing well by doing excellent or doing excellent by doing well!
Inspired by C.K. Prahalad’s leap forwards insights in the original edition of The Chance at the Bottom of the Pyramid, a wide variety of firms are identifying, building, and profiting from new markets among the world’s poorest people–while at the same time helping eliminate poverty and human misery. Five years after this book’s first publication, Prahalad’s thoughts are no longer isolated instances of innovations. They are proven, widely practiced “reality.”
In this 5th Anniversary Edition, Prahalad updates his book to give readers a picture of how this thought is being implemented in poor regions around the world.
Prahalad also offers an up-to-the-minute assessment of key questions such as: Is there truly a market? Is there scale? Is there profit? Is there innovation? Is this a global opportunity? Five years ago, executives could be hopeful that the answers to these questions would be positive. Now, as Prahalad demonstrates, they can be certain of it.

A new approach which in fact is so simple but psychologically so hard to accept. We have tried it out and and experimental companies doing it since 16 years: to design and market low end products for the “Bottom of the Pyramid” (BOP) with high profit margins at low cost. We have developed a tool which we call MMP or Multiple Market Positioning which shows step by step how to apply this BOP thought successfully. Give a man to fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
It’s a fantastic quote. But it’s not from the Bible. It’s just a well-worn proverb that teaches that education is better than enablement.

Prahalad’book “the chance at the bottom of the pyramid” demonstrates the importance to get the people we are “supposed” to help to get involved. The bottom up approach is in line with William Shaffeerly and David Bornstein books where the people are key to any lasting development. The top down approach a la Jeffrey Sacks are fine for the politicians but did not bring much results after all these years. It is time for a change in approach and the Nobel Fee to Dr. M.Yunus is very encouraging.

…teach a man to fish, and he’ll eat for a lifetime” is establish nowhere in the Bible, sir.
But this is:
Better is the poor who walks in his integrity than he who is bent though he be rich. (Proverbs 28:6)
