One of the Best Books of the Year:
New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Boston Globe, and Time
An instant classic of war reporting, The Forever War is the definitive account of America’s conflict with Islamic fundamentalism and a searing exploration of its human costs. Through the eyes of Filkins, a foreign correspondent for the New York Times, we witness the rise of the Taliban in the 1990s, the aftermath of the attack on New York on September 11th, and the American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Filkins is the only American journalist to have reported on all these events, and his experiences are conveyed in a riveting narrative filled with unforgettable characters and astonishing scenes.
Brilliant and fearless, The Forever War is not just about America’s wars after 9/11, but about the scenery of war itself.

for a writer to use the Lord’s name in vain, is my signal to place the book down. for this reason i did not get beyond the first few pages.

I made it through 7 chapters before I place it down for excellent. I was skeptical from the beginning when I saw an Leader from The New York Times writing a book on any war, but I thought I would give it a try. If I was a Marine in Iraq or Afghanistan and this guy showed up next to me in the heat of battle I would have highly upset. His theme — Ignorant young soldiers in an unnecessary battle. At least Dexter Filkins got a life experience out of it while the courageous soldiers saved his life.

For persons of us that don’t know Bush’s War, this is a tiny insight into another world. More American’s need to know we are in a Global Society and we can hide behind our wealth and the 82nd Airborne

This is a fantastic book. It made me feel like I was in Iraq (God forbid) with these terrific American kids and the poor Iraqis.
Only thing I despised was Filkins’ small jogs around Baghdad. He seems like the hideous American, indulging himself amidst all this suffering and tempting fate to boot.
Between the silly running and the dreadful incident with Miller, I got the distinct feeling that Filkins is an adolescent.
Much much younger than the real adolescents with whom he is embedded. I was embarrassed for him.

As my review title suggests, I had not followed the conduct of the war as closely as I might have over the years. Mr. Filkins’ work is quit incredible. I suggest this book to anyone with a thirst for understanding. Well done.
