We trip in the Sierra Nevada every summer and I wanted to start learning about foraging in these gorgeous forests. Sorry to say, information for this area is sorely missing in this volume. I’m sure the Indians who inhabited this area establish plenty of wonderful plants to eat. Fortunately for them, they did not have to rely on this book. I will have to look elsewhere for a resource on plants of the Sierra.

This book served as my introduction to wild foods.
Lacking a basic education in plant science, you will have a lot of catching up to do. This book doesn’t really represent a perfect “guide” to the identification of the various plant establish in my area (which was not the leader’s goal), and even for persons plants listed the leader expressly instructs the beginning forager to cross reference every plant they intend to consume with at least two “meadow guides”. There’s the detail we all wanted to avoid..the need for more research…but it is unavoidable.
You have to know exactly what it is you are preparation to eat with absolute certainty, and the only way to do that is through a process of cross referencing meadow guides, and of course to use a meadow guide you’ll need a decent grasp on plant science and plant terminology.
The fantastic thing about this book is that the leader really shows how certain parts of a plant must be processed before consumption.
Overall I’d say this is a excellent book to have in your collection, but it will in no way prepare you to head out to the woods, gather up some goodies, and come back home to prepare a nice meal of wild produce (nor will any additional single book). The thought is to learn to identify one plant at a time and expand in increments.

A very well written book. Each plant is treated with fantastic attention to detail, and an obvious passion that can only come from personal experience. This book is not proposed to take in a huge number of different plants, but the ones it does take in are all worthwhile plants to learn.

I gave this book 5 stars because it is brilliant. It has multiple colour pictures of the plant in question and sometimes of the plant’s treacherous look-alike (even amongst excellent books, not all have colour photos). The leader speaks from experience – he eats the plants he tells you you can eat. I like that. He also shares his amusing small tales about each one. Besides pictures there is a discussion on the plant’s description, range and habitat and harvest and preparation. The only thing that could be better would be if there were more plants in the book. Maybe he could produce a second book with some more? I would buy it.

LOVE THIS BOOK! It covers plants in thorough detail – includes: description, range, habitat, harvest, and preparation. Color photos that show the plants in the right stage for consumption = brilliant! Best wild foods book that we have read!
We consider this book a must have if you are interested in eating wild plants.
