My wife and I read this book together and establish it very simple, nothing new. People, just use your own common sense and treat each additional with like and respect and you will be pleased together. Plus just too pious for our tastes.

It is ironic that a book that is promoting loving communication can be so alienating. Perhaps a book that is more secular in scenery would be more helpful. I just want this recognizable for what it is: Pop-psychology, couched in language so it is very palatable to a point sub-segment of our society. This book is not and should not be pitched as the be-all-and-end-all of relationship communication books.
While it is helpful to a certain degree to admit different styles in communication, language like “filling up your like meter” is an oversimplification of some very complex issues between individuals. I do not like language that can be used to trivialize and to dismiss vital issues within a relationship.

The goal of the book “The Five Like Languages” by Gary Chapman is to learn how to communicate heartfelt commitment to your mate. The book achieves its purpose by explaining five possible ways (or like languages) people prompt and/or receive like. Armed with the knowledge of how to admit and speak your mates primary like language(s) your mates like tank should hopefully never run low; resulting in a successful and pleased marriage.
The “Five Like Languages” makes for a fantastic suppliment tool. The material in the book only deals with one aspect of marriage (expressing commitment),and would be best used with a Biblical study on marriage (or relationships). This is a fantastic tool, but shouldn’t be the only tool in ones marriage tool box.
I feel there is a caution worth mentioning in regards to this book. The “Five Like Languages” is not a Bible study, nor does it prompt the foundational teachings of marriage in the Bible. The book doesn’t clarify the marriage covenant, God’s teaches about marriage, or what the Biblical roles are of the spouse and wife.
