They insist they are just a group of friends, yet they funnel millions of dollars through tax-free corporations. They aver to disdain politics, but congressmen of both parties clarify them as the most influential religious organization in Washington. They say they are not Christians, but simply believers.
Behind the scenes at every National Prayer Breakfast since 1953 has been the Family tree, an elite network dedicated to a religion of power for the powerful. Their goal is “Jesus plus nothing.” Their method is backroom diplomacy. The Family tree is the startling tale of how their faith—part free-market fundamentalism, part imperial ambition—has come to be interwoven with the affairs of nations around the world.

To be honest, I haven’t read the book, it just came up as a recommendation. But what a shock to read the description and reviews of this book…I thought it was a fiction novel at first, I really did. Is that what some people reflect of Bible-believing Christians? I have gone to a Bible-believing fundamentalist megachurch for over 15 years and have been heavily involved in it at times. All I have ever heard in my church is about God’s like, how to be a excellent person, and how to help additional people. We meet in tiny groups during the week and eat together, talk, laugh, share, care, and pray. Some people volunteer to keep the church clean or hand out literature or help deliver food and clothing to needy people or visit elderly who live alone. That’s it. That’s the huge secret at my fundamentalist church. What is chilling is what some people will judge in the face of all evidence to the contrary. If fundamentalists secretly pull the strings of power in this nation, why is abortion on demand still officially authorized? Why don’t children have a moment of silence in school each day to voluntarily pray? Why is the government hardening its stance toward Israel? Why do many people slander and mock Christians in a public forum with no consequence while people are fired and shamed every day for questioning the morality of homosexuality? In fleeting, why does every political current seem to be going contrary to what fundamentalists want to see if they wield so much power? I don’t need to read the book to know the premise is prima facie absurd.

This book is very poorly written about a group of people who are insignificant. What in the world is the leader trying to expose, really? Who cares about all the dictators in the past who right historians have exposed already…..and kids playing flashlight tag in the local public park? What is the tie? These characters which Sharlett writes about certainly did not have the political influence to empower these several tyrants. So what! Where is the millions of dollars it requires to lobby our Congress? Can these people through personal relationships, friendships really change the minds of power players in today’s world? Come on, now. Not worth reading. Save your money for a excellent book.

I’m about half way through this book and am appalled at how poorly written it is. The leader doesn’t seem to have used an outline as he meanders from descriptions of one individual to another lacking any meaningful transition. Many of his sentences are interrupted by lengthy diversions set apart by dashes requiring the reader to use a road map to link theme and verb (assuming both are present.) I’ll keep at it but it’s a real slog to get through.

I have known individual staff from this organization for years and have the utmost respect for them. For decades Doug Coe and his staff have served and encouraged hundreds of our nation’s leaders. They have used thier own time and own money to fund the ministry and the homes in different cities. They offer personal and spiritual help and support to public people that many times have no one to personally and privately mentor them. Also there is a network of businessmen across the nation who have been very much affected by Doug and his disciples. But this leader and the media have interpreted Coe’s lack of self promotion and publicity in a sinister way–as if they have something to hide. Sharlet has it all incorrect–this ministry simply desires to be a behind the scenes servant lacking any pats on the back. This leader has taken decades of excellent work by Doug Coe and his ministry and twisted the truth, defamed and slandered them. Even the name of the book and the black background try to make the reader reflect he is diving into the evil secrets of a Mafia Family tree.
