Product Description
No home, whether in the country, the city, or somewhere in between, should be lacking this one-of-a-kind encyclopedia — the most perfect source of information available about growing, processing, cooking, and preserving homegrown foods from the garden, orchard, meadow, or barnyard. For more than 30 years, people have relied on its practical, step-by-step advice on basic self-capability skills such as how to cultivate a garden, buy land, bake bread, raise farm animals, make sausage, milk a goat, grow herbs, churn butter, erect a chicken coop, cook on a wood oven, and much, much more. First written at the height of the 1960s back-to-the-land movement, the book has been continually revised, updated, and expanded, and has grown from a self-published, mimeographed document to an exhaustive reference of more than one million words, 2,000+ recipes, and over 1,500 mail order sources. Emery’s personal advice, reflections, and anecdotes ensure that this incredibly detailed, diverse reference is as enjoyable as it is useful.

The leader takes up way too much space in this book, and there’s way too much fluff. This must be her first book

If you want to be preach at, Read this book!! If you want significant country life information, get a different book. Carla has a hidden agenda to convert everyone…I wanted a country living reference guide, not the bible reprinted.

I returned this book as it came hurt. The paper stock used is reasonably cheap- nearly like newspaper. i will not repurchase….

I bought this for myself, but would not do again. A much to large tome, very confusing at times and dull. Maybe for a serious farmer it MIGHT be appealing, but for the average consumer it is to dry and dull. I find myself using it as a reference on a rare occasion for some recipe related item, but mostly collecting dust. Might be donated to the local public book source soon, not worth the shelf space in my opinion. Spend your precious cash elsewhere.

In terms of content, brilliant — the only thing is Carla’s tendancy to give you info on her personal life that I felt had no impact on the how-to info being shared.
