Product Description
THE CONSCIOUS COOK is a leap forwards in lacto-vegetarian cuisine. By teaching readers how to make truly satisfying and tasty meals lacking the meat and dairy‚ it makes the shift to a lacto-vegetarian lifestyle simple.
A ex- steak lover himself‚ Chef Tal struggled for years on a lacto-vegetarian diet that left him hungry and filled with cravings for butter and meat. About ten years ago‚ he chose that the best way to satisfy his dietary desires was to make food that was excellent enough for “foodies” and could gratify his cravings for rich flavor and stout. The solution? Make lacto-vegetarian meals with substantial proteins that could factually change the way people eat. He studied all aspects of non−meat proteins and today is widely regarded as the practiced in the meadow‚ developing new concepts for meals and sauces and helping to improve textures for food companies such as Gardein (the provider of vegetable proteins used by
Morningstar Farms‚ It′s All Excellent‚ Trader Joe′s brands‚ and the prepared food department of Whole Foods‚ to name a few).
THE CONSCIOUS COOK features a center−of−the−plate protein in all of its entrees−a first for lacto-vegetarian cookbooks. Seventy−five original recipes are organized by categories that include starters and tiny plates‚ soups and salads‚ entrees‚ and desserts. Each recipe is accompanied by stunning full−color photographs.

I have tasted Tal’s cooking and got to see the book briefly.
The book is perfectly done and a joy to look at. It could be a coffee table book except it belongs in the kitchen.
Can’t wait to try the recipes!

I returned the book. The recepies were confusing to me due to the various
species unknown to me.

Like the book EXCEPT I assumed as with most cookbooks each recipe would have the nutrition information included – this book does not – I don’t want to eat a lot of stout and assumed I would be able to see how much was in each serving of each recipe – I will have to do the calculations myself
– additional than that excellent recipes

This is the worst cookbook I have EVER bought. The recipes are hard and extremely time consuming. The ingredients are not readily available and the processes take forever. In the end you end up with a marginally palatable meal for all your effort.

I am looking forwards to trying a recipe or two when on trip. All the recipes require at minimum 60 minutes for preparation. The recipes do sound tasty and the cookbook is informative and a piece of art itself. I am sure to delight in at some point. I would recommend this book as a gift for the lacto-vegetarian in your life. Not recommended for a beginner ‘chef’.
