This is my new favorite book. I’m in 8th grade and I like reading. I also like the Rangers Aprentice Series, but this book is pure awesome. If you are looking at reviews to see if you should read it, then you should. I want to be a part time writer some day, and S. A. Bodeen is the type of writer that I want to be.

The Compound was one of persons incredible books that you just CANNOT place down! From the first chapter, I was hooked. I proceeded to read it in two hours and was just blown away.
Plot: Eli, the 15 year ancient son of a billionaire, has been living with his family tree in an underground compound since he was 9. Bodeen provides an amazingly detailed description of the compound that is fascinating on its own. The characters in this tale are well-developed and Eli the main character (who is completely unlikable in the beginning) shapes up to be a very likeable character toward the end. One of my favorite things about this book is the pace. Unlike some suspenseful tales that have you ripping your hair out to know if you are right or not, Bodeen keeps us in suspense while constantly moving forwards with the plot. Something I despise in a tale is when the main character does not come out and confront their issues and this doesn’t take place in this book. Everything is questioned nearly as soon as it is establish out. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, until the very end. I promise you will not be able to place this book down.
This is a fantastic read that I would recommmend to middle readers as well as adults. The Compound is one of the my new favorite books! Bodeen is an leader to watch for – I cannot wait to read her next novel.

This book was compelling from beginning to end. If you loved hunger games, you will delight in this only because the simple drama in it. I look forwards and wish for a sequel to this book.

Who wants to be in a bomb shelter when your twin and grandmother are locked outside during a war? Not me. . .not even if the bomb shelter is a mansion and a perfect replica of your father’s above-ground mansion. Eli is stuck in that position.
As a teacher, I read the novel before I place it on my bookshelf. I was glad that I had read it. It was an addictive read. Although it was not as disturbing as Unwind by Neal Shusterman, it certainly was creepy. I couldn’t wait to share the novel with my students. All it took was one student to start the war for the book. I had a waiting list sometimes ten deep for the book–boys at that! My only regret is that I bought the paperback; the hardback would have better survived middle school mayhem and wear and tear.

This is one of the few books that manages the status of a thriller lacking constant action. A book that moves consistently from action scene to action scene inevitably becomes dull, weird as it may sound. This book keeps up the suspense because there is also an aura of claustrophobia as Eli moves throughout the Compound. Despite the tiny physical space in which he moves her characters, Bodeen does an brilliant job of portraying the characters going throughout a routine they have no choice but to embrace. The theme of choice quickly evolves into our era’s greatest moral questions (emphasizing birth control and cloning) as the pace of the book quickens, and as Eli is open with more and more choices, he discovers more about the people around him. Everyone in the Compound, with the exception of Eli’s father, is distinctly out of their element despite the part of time they have had to adjust to the tiny space. The concept of teenage uprising is incorporated into that of moral choice in an brilliant confrontation of moral and familial responsibility. An aggressive and mature commentary, but still more than worthwhile. Highly recommended.
