I am reluctant to place much effort into writing a review about a entry level text. The information contained within is generic and simplistic. If you can distinguish between a hammer and a nail this book is not for you. I’m going to give mine to my 10 year ancient national.

I establish this book very simple to read and well laid out, but a small missing in some point topics.
I consider myself a novice/newbie woodworker, and as such I look for simple, basic information to erect upon (no pun proposed). I am currently looking at constructing some simple cabinets/boxes using Melamine, and this book will not provide much information for this. It mentions many of the ‘man-made’ products available today, but does not provide any info how to work with them. I wanted some point information for effective with Melamine:
- how boxes might be constructed using Melamine
- types of joints that are typically used: dadoes vs butt joints
- Can you glue Melamine?
- Can you use screws with this material?
But this book does not provide any such info.
This book is geared towards making projects out of levelheaded wood, which I plot to do someday, but that’s not where I’m starting. So I will continue reading and keep the book around until I have sharpened my skills enough to go onto the ‘larger & better’ projects

Not for beginners…The book is perfectly done as far as construction, pictures, binding, etc. but needs a small more about basic tools. E.G. Coping saw is used for coping. O.K.?
If your looking for the basics this isn’t it.

This is an brilliant reference guide in simple and concise language; excellent for the hobbist or professional. This book is not proposed to give a blow by blow, but merely to highlight directions. Woodworking is, as it permanently has been, a effective tao, where one hopefully never loses the sense of discovery. One realizes that if it were just about “Slamming It Out” we’d use plastic.

A fantastic book. Certainly a must in any woodworker’s library. As permanently Taunton maintains the highest standard in Craftsman’s literature. Brilliant fee for the value of the content.
