This edition of the book is more up-to-date, so it’s really useful to some extent. Mostly, though, it’s a book written by experts for experts. There is small thought agreed to the practical application of genealogy — building friends with newly establish relatives, for example, and family tree reunions. There is no mention of the politics that go into genealogy. You can easily ruin your family tree by writing the incorrect date for a marriage on your successor chart, but the book really omits vital facts like that! It has a tiny chapter on DNA, which is nice, but it leaves out critical information on that topic, too. The “Idiot’s” title of this book is misleading; the authors fail to reflect like a layman. Beware.

This book is reasonably up to date and provides copious references in case you need more depth of information in certain areas. Even the most critical review gives it 3 stars. I do agree that there is more detail than needed in some areas. This is hardly a fault as I can skim persons topics and comeback for more detail later if needed.
