Product Description
“I usually say to the child, “Congratulations, you have Asperger’s syndrome”, and clarify that this means he or she is not mad, terrible or defective, but has a different way of thinking.” – from “The Perfect Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome”. “The Perfect Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome” is the definitive handbook for anyone affected by Asperger’s syndrome (AS). It brings together a wealth of information on all aspects of the syndrome for children through to adults. Drawing on case studies and personal accounts from Attwood’s wide clinical experience, and from his correspondence with individuals with AS, this book is both authoritative and extremely accessible. The chapters examine: causes and indications of the syndrome; the diagnosis and its effect on the individual; theory of mind; the perception of emotions in self and others; social interaction, including friendships; long-term relationships; teasing, bullying and mental health issues; the effect of AS on language and cognitive abilities, sensory sensitivity, movement and co-ordination skills; and, career development. There is also an invaluable frequently questioned questions chapter and a section listing useful resources for anyone wishing to find further information on a particular aspect of AS, as well as literature and educational tools. Essential reading for families and individuals affected by AS as well as teachers, professionals and employers coming in contact with people with AS, this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who needs to know or is interested in this complex condition.

I haven’t finished reading this book but so far so excellent and everything was fine with the manner of language and quality of the book.

I bought this book after it was recommended to me as the best book about Asperger’s Syndrome. Imagine my shock when I establish it riddled with generalizations and stereotypes of ‘normal’ children, and many incorrect assumptions about all ‘normal’ children’s reasoning abilities. That sets the tone for the entire book, how ‘normal’ children can do just about everything correctly all the time, and children with Asperger’s Syndrome can’t possibly do anything unless the world stops and adapts to these children.
So, now my copy is full of red arrows, question inscription, and I’ve yet to find one useful piece of information in there that would really help a child with Asperger’s Syndrome.
I didn’t read every single word of it, mainly because Attwood seems to go around in circles about certain characteristics, so that I felt I was reading the same information over and over and over again. The guide is certainly perfect (a few time over, really) and if you have a terrible case of insomnia, it works wonders.
I wouldn’t waste my money on it, but feel free to check it out at your local library.

Pretty hi-tech clinical reading, but lots of excellent info. Wouldn’t offer this for the average Joe who just wants to know what aspergers is and how to cope with it.

This is a well written book with plenty of information to answer all your questions. It is techinical in spots, so you may need to re-read some of the topics. This book is recommended by therapists too in understanding this condition.

I recently encountered a name with Asperger’s in my private practice as a sex therapist and wanted to quickly learn more, so I ordered this book. Although the client agreed up for lost and would not be returning (not a surprise) before the book arrived, I chose to take a look. I was impressed by how well written this book is, and how practical as well. It reinforced and helped me to consolidate what I already knew. This book is a keeper.
