Gary Larson calls The Perfect Far Side, the massive two-volume collection of his Far Side cartoons, an “18-pound hernia giver.” Sure to give any coffee table a levelheaded workout, the handsome and heavy 1,272-page “legacy book” is a must for fervent fans; over 4,300 single-panel comics with more than half in color and 1,100 that have not appeared in any book form before (the well loved–and far less weighty–paperback collections).
Set in rough chronological order, the comics share pages with occasional letters from fans, detractors, editors, folks made legendary by a particular cartoon, and persons begging for explanations. Though few explanations are provided (Larson personally supplies merely one, plus a single apology), this collection helps answer the inevitable “how do you reflect up these things” conundrum. Before each year’s cartoons, Larson provides insight with essays about his childhood, various travels, occupational hazards, and his official rules for dealing with bedtime monsters (which regularly turned out to be his older brother). Most wonderful is the first essay on how the comic ongoing. (His longtime editor Jake Morrissey’s long introduction is a must read on The Far Side’s tale).
Despite no central characters, it’s simple to spot patterns in Larson’s wild and wacky cartoons. Animals, insects, and inanimate objects regularly exhibit all-too-human impulses. Larson’s subjects are regularly in scenes of peril–disasters, visits to hell, and perhaps a hundred cartoons set on a one-palm tree deserted island. It is what Larson’s fertile imagination mined from persons situations that made fans and enemies for 14 years. (Larson retired at his peak and then went into jazz composition). The comics are not indexed (how could they be–first lines? listings of cartoons with cows?); finding a favorite requires a fantastic memory for its publication date. How many times must we be questioned to buy the same cartoons yet again? There’s nothing new here additional than the wrapper and the sticker fee. This nonstop re-selling of the same thing, over and over again, is so amusing IT should be the theme of Larson’s next cartoon (if he ever draws another one – and why would he when suckers keep on buying the same cartoons?) The cartoon would probably occupy a doofy looking Larson character going into a bookstore through a revolving door again and again. Piles of the same book growing on the sidewalk outside the bookstore. A thought bubble over the head of the buyer…”I must be suffering from repetitive buying syndrome.”
I give Larson the credit he deserves while he was on the playing meadow. He was fantastic. It finished in 1995, as did Watterson’s reign. I don’t even blame Larson for selling the same cartoons over and over. I blame the syndicate for not being creative enough to replace him.
The best thing I can say about this book is that perhaps it will finally be the LAST of the SAME THING OVER AND OVER…but that presumes too much creativity at the syndicate’s end. In the long run getting a replacement for Larson would prove THE most financially successful go they could make. THIS COW HAS BEEN MILKED!

Ok, I admit I am weak. But this thing is way too heavy.

Imagine my surprise upon opening a sealed copy of this set to learn significant grease stains on the pages of the first volume. For what this set represents and what it costs, this is unacceptable.

I don’t even have it yet, but Amazon says I will by next Wednesday or so. I’ve read Larson for as long as I’ve been able, and at around $50 less than retail how can you not buy it? Like persons cows!! Please come back Gary!

I like the Far Side and want to own it perfect, but I have no room for this elephantine set. Why didn’t the publisher also make a CD-ROM or DVD version, which anyone would have room for? “5″ for content, “1″ for format = “3″ rating
