Sixty years have passed since a curious small chimp in Africa met the man with the huge yellow hat and got into the first of many scrapes. Decades later, George is as curious–and naughty–as ever. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Curious George’s debut, this special edition is a collection of seven classic adventures by Margret and H.A. Rey, along with an introduction by critic Leonard Marcus, a retrospective note by publisher Anita Silvey, a history of the Reys by Dee Jones, curator of the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection, and a photo baby book. The many generations of fans of the “excellent small monkey who was permanently very curious” will be fascinated to learn how H.A. and Margret escaped on bicycle from German-occupied Paris, with just their winter coats and several picture books (including a draft of Curious George, then called Fifi) strapped to the racks. Photos and essays reveal H.A. to have been a gentle, humorous man, while Margret, by all accounts, was spirited and cruelly direct, with a keen business mind. The chemistry between them worked perfectly. Between them, they made one of the most beloved characters in children’s literature. This handsome volume includes Curious George, Curious George Takes a Job, Curious George Rides a Bike, Curious George Gets a Medal, Curious George Flies a Kite, Curious George Learns the Alphabet, and Curious George Goes to the Hospital. This book is too scary for my whole family tree. My child is now traumatized and needs mental help. My wife thought the water colors were very cold and made her depressed. Customers should reflect before buying a book like this.

Curious George gets kidnapped from his natural habitat in an African jungle by a “nice” man who throws a sack over him, bundles him onto a ship and takes him to America where he puts him in a “nice” zoo.
Is this the kind of “niceness” we want our children to learn?

I read it and was disappointed. My 6-year-ancient cousin, Amanda Rebecca Jacinto, really thinks it is dumb! She said, “This book is dull, (my name)! Why did you buy me this? I wish you bought me ‘Where the Wild Things Are’! Katelyn said it was cool.”

The Curious George tales are cute in tiny doses but after awhile they become rather repetitive.

Although the illustrations are irresistable, I would not recommend the content of the first few books, at least, for children lacking some guidance from parents/teachers. They would, but, be excellent springboards for discussions about changing perspectives on wildlife and animal rights. When the Reys wrote their books, human dominance and exploitation of wild animals was nearly unquestioned in their culture. Today, the sight of a young chimpanzee being captured, taken to the city, agreed alcohol and cigarettes, being imprisoned in a jail and then a zoo and being used in the film industry is disturbing, to say the least. I could see children learning to reflect about animals and wildlife, and learning to empathize with additional species, from these books.
