Now on audio — excerpts from the mega-bestselling companion volume to Ken Burns’ phenomenally successful nine-part PBS Series, “The Civil War.”
The Civil War is a stunning evocation of one of the most crucial times in our history, one that has recaptured the American imagination. Here are the events of a war that tore our nation asunder, from the firing of the first shot at Fort Sumter, to the siege of Vicksburg, the battles of Shiloh and Gettysburg, to Sherman’s march to the sea, to the fall of Richmond. Here, too, is the tale of the familiar facts who battled at the frontlines and behind the scenes: President Lincoln, Southern statesman Jefferson Davis and the brilliant generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. And here are glimpses into the lives of the soldiers, the slaves, the families who willingly fought against their own kin. This is an extraordinary and spectacular account of a moment in history that dramatically and forever changed America.

A excellent basic,, strictly introductory account of the so called CIVIL war from a revisionary point of view. At least it did point out that lincoln USED the slavery issue to help win the war and NOT as a reason to fight it.
Lots of pics of confederate dead,,only confederate dead?? no union dead,,why is that??
Any way the maps are nice.

Originally unrestricted in conjunction with the television history “The Civil War” which aired on public television, this book is excellent enough to stand on its own merits.
Geoffrey C. Ward subsequently started a long term professional association with documentary film maker Ken Burns and collaborated with him on additional book and film projects. Ward also distinguished himself with a biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (“A First Class Temperament”).
Ward writes well and assembles his materials in a thorough manner. The book is lavishly illustrated photographs of key locations and vintage pictures from the battle fields. Readers will profit from studying this book even if they do not watch the series of television programs.

Brilliant, in every way and the photos are fascinating.

This is a very brilliant and simple-to-read book. My only possible comment is that the maps are to some extent unhelpful.

Burns is at his best here with Ward. His voice keeps you enthralled. Besides the Lewis & Clark audio, this one is a very close second. Doesn’t take in the war in fantastic detail, but tells its on tale very well.
