This book provides clear visual and written instructions for many knitting basics. Fantastic resource for a variety of basic knitting stitches and techniques. The patterns are limited, but very workable for the beginning knitter.

I have been knitting for about three months but I didnt feel that I had the knowledge to make fantastic projects. I refuse to make scarfs and wash clothes so I needed something different for beginners. This book is full of projects including the basic scarf, shrugs, dog sweaters and more ALL FOR BEGINNERS. It teaches you everything you need to know how to start what type of yarn to buy and even how to fix mistakes. Not dull at ALL.

I establish this book hard to follow the diagrams. As far as casting on, I had a friend show me a way that worked for me. The book only shows one way while stating that there are many ways. Would not recommend for a beginner. It nearly squashed my desire to learn knitting. I am an avid crochet fan and have been so for over 30 years.

Authors Queen and O’Connell bring a fresh, new approach to teaching an ancient theme. This book starts at the very beginning, explaining needles, yarn, gauges, and basic stitches. With each additional step they teach, they give you one or more projects to let you try it out. They use a wide variety of yarns in their projects, giving you a excellent sense of what’s available today.
In fact, if there was one thing I could complain about, it’s that the authors used too many fancy yarns too soon. These ladies assume you have a top-flight yarn store in your neighborhood and you can afford to shop there. I didn’t see one project that used yarn you could buy at national craft chains. In addition, the first two projects, a scarf and an envelope bag, require you to knit with two different-sized yarns held together. That’s not something I would suggest a name attempt on their first two projects. Although I have to admit, the results are stunning.
Aside from that one caveat, this book is an brilliant choice if you’re just learning. The authors supply handy extras such as practical shortcuts and an entire chapter on how to fix your mistakes. Their goal is to give you all the information you would expect to get if you were taking a class in a yarn store. Whether you’re a rank beginner, or just need to round out your repertoire of knitting knowledge, The Chicks with Sticks Guide to Knitting is an brilliant choice.

This book was my first knitting book, and I either have made or intend to make nearly every project in it! The projects are modern, and the instructions are very clear and simple to follow.
