This is the New Revised Standard Version, which the Holy See does not allow for use in the liturgy. Catholics wanting to use approved translations should consider the New American Bible– St. Joseph Ed. and the New Jerusalem Bible– Regular Ed., both of which include copious footnotes and commentaries.

When you buy a bible for your kids you permanently marvel. Will they read it and get the message of god? Well the answer for this book is YES.
Brian Singer does a fantastic job with this book and my kids school is giving it to all students.
Thank-you!

Why are there pages after pages highlighting “African Americans,” “Asian Americans,” and “Native Americans”? When did the Catholic Church choose to be politically right and make sure all these groups stand out and be inserted artificially? I have nothing against them. I just marvel what prompted the insertion of a polytheistic culture into the Catholic bible. Can’t we all chat about the bible lacking labeling each additional “this American” and “that American.” I’m Irish — a group highly persecuted 19th-early 20th century. I judge they also have something to do with Catholicism… yet I find no mention of this group or many others. The additional reviews point out the excellent aspects of this bible. So I will not reiterate them here. There were many of course. But there are not enough to prompt me to support this mockery.

Although there are many excellent things in this Bible, I reflect the errors and objectionable content make it an unacceptable teacher of the Catholic Faith. (language of the notes and commentary)
Some sections contain disturbing and to some extent offensive material. For example: p. 123 offers a subjective view of a womens monthly cycle, and seems to cast doubt on the words of Sacred Scripture. And p. 810, the commentator calls the leader of Sirach “extremely sexist” (by today’s standards).
In addition, p.1249 the analyst says this about the leader of John’s Gospel “…the Gospel writer regularly makes negative references to ‘the Jews’…As a result, (of persecution of Christian by Jews) the Gospel writer lumps all Jews together, portraying them as ‘terrible guys’”.
There are also MANY sections that offer additional cultural perspectives (multi-cultural). I reflect they are proposed to show the relationship, or similarities, to the Christian faith, but for what purpose? To confuse a teenager? They are irrelevent and can regularly be confusing to a name who doesn’t know that the Bible transcends racial differences.
In my (hopefully humble) opinion, this Bible is yet another example of “watering-down” the Faith.

I bought this book for my fourth child becasue she needed her own bible. It has quickly become the family tree favorite because of several reasons. One, it is a fantastic size for kids and parents to hold and read. Two, the added tales inside each chapter of the Bible helps give context and know of the passages. Three, all four of our kids are graviting to this bible, this is what you want in a youth bible—Kids reading it! No regrets.
