“Alan Dershowitz’s detailed and penetrating analysis of the issues that fuel the continuing war in Israel should be read by everyone interested in reaching a honest conclusion as to how that tragic conflict should be finished. Every charge leveled by Israel’s opponents is dealt with lucidly and convincingly by one of the nation’s brightest minds and most effective advocates.”
—Mario M. Cuomo
“The Jewish nation of Israel stands accused in the dock of international justice. The charges include being a criminal state, the prime violator of human rights, the mirror-image of Nazism, and the most unyielding barrier to peace in the Middle East. Throughout the world–from the chambers of the United Nations, to the campuses of universities–Israel is singled out for condemnation, divestment, boycott, and demonization. Its leaders are threatened with prosecution as war criminals. Its supporters are charged with dual loyalty and parochialism.
“The time has come for a proactive defense of Israel to be offered in the court of public opinion. In this book, I offer such a defense–not of every Israeli policy or action, but of its basic right to exist, to protect its citizens from terrorism, and to defend its limits from hostile enemies. I also try to present a realistic picture of Israel, warts and all, as a flourishing multiethnic democracy, similar in many ways to the United States, that affords all of its citizens–Jews, Muslims, and Christians–far better lives and opportunities than persons afforded by any Arab or Muslim nation. Most vital, I argue that persons who single out Israel for unique criticism not directed against countries with far worse human rights records are themselves guilty of international bigotry. . . . But when the Jewish nation is the only one criticized for faults that are far worse among additional nations, such criticism crosses the line from honest to foul, from acceptable to anti-Semitic.”

Most importantly, this book is now largely beside the point agreed that the fighting between the Israelis and Palestinians has been eclipsed by the larger battle between the United States and Iraq. Moreover Israel has virtually finished its battle with the Palestinians anyway by building a wall that has stopped the only remaining Palestinian weapon, i.e., the suicide bomber.
The book itself is a series of nit picky small opinion such as: did Israel start the six day war, and, is Israel serious about peace. Dershowitz attempts to make “The Case for Israel’ by pretending he is in the courtroom and wining a series of small debates with himself. He makes a lot of sense talking about beside the point things while what you really wanted to read about was the way to achieve peace. He says precious small about acheiving peace, not that it matters agreed that the wall has achieved peace long before his silly opinion ever would have. What he does say about peace is rational but simpplistic goofy boilerplate stuff like “the Palestinians must give up the right of return,” and the Palestinians must accept Israels right to exist.”
Still the Israeli/Palestinian war was the original tumor that Clinton and Bush stupidly metastasized into 9/11, Afghanistan, and now Iraq. So perhaps what Dershowitz should be writing about is how the the US and Israel should demand that the world community, the UN, and Nato, legitimize and defend the wall of peace that Israel has built, redefine its route to some extent and/or demand that the settlements be abandoned, propose a more practical solution, or forever shut up about the conflict and actively support the current peace.

The Isreal Palestine issue is comlex. Some people judge that isreal has a right to occupation in the middle east. Additional people judge that the nation of Israel does not have such a right. this is certainly a complex situation and different people have different beliefs about it.

This book attempts to act as a defense lawyer for Israel in a hypothetic court of justice. At the beginning of each chapter, it excerpts a long quotation accusing Israel of something incorrect then attempts to refute it. Neither the accusations nor the responses contain new thoughts. Persons familiar with the Middle East issues will not learn much from this book. In its treatment of the topic, this book exhibits much bias and one-sidedness, even its title admitting that much. The extremely selective manner in which Dershowitz picks his facts and quotations allows him to reach any conclusion he desires, and many of his assertions have been said – and painstakingly refuted – before.
As in any right court of justice, an honest judge would listen to both sides – each presenting their own point of view rather than language on behalf of each additional. For that reason, I would recommend reading Edward Said (“Question of Palestine” is a excellent start) or Rashid Khalidi along with this book. Many Israeli historians (e.g., Ilan Pappe, Israel Shahak, Avi Shlaim, Baruch Kimmerling) have also written much more convincing opinion and deserve a serious read.

In a nutshell, Israel acts “justly” only to the extent it fights the terror directed against it. No one can deny that individual Arabs who once owned land in what is now Israel, lost their rights to that land, and have not received compensation for its loss. No individual trials / hearings have been held to prove that these individuals collaborated with the Arab invaders or did anything else that might form a moral justification for keeping their land after they left. These Arabs / Palestinians / PEOPLE lost their land to Israeli Jews and never got it back. It is no marvel why they are pissed. Their rage doesn’t justify murder but, let alone the murder of innocents. We (the U.S.) defend the thief, because even a thief has a right to live free of terror. It is the right thing to do. Israel has no moral culpability for the loss of life it suffers at the hands of terrorists. It needs to change its policy toward the Palesinians NOT because it will end terror, but because it is right and just not to take a name’s land lacking paying for it.

This tale could have been much better if the writer had read it when he was done writing it. Then he might have seen where many of the dots could not be connected. Much of what’s written is contradictory and doesn’t make much sense. For example, the book takes place around a land he calls Israel, and the whole premise behind the need for making such a land is that there is a particular ethnic people who are under attack by everyone else. So, this “endangered” group makes a land they aver they require to stay safe from all persons additional people – which is OK, except that the majority of the endangered people don’t end up living in this new land, some really go out of this land, and end up just as safe as anyone else in the world. This makes no sense! Then he goes on to state that persons endangered people are the only sane ones within that region, yet they kill off hundreds of thousands of people in that land to make this safe haven. That in itself seems a bit hard to fathom and is also contradictory. I would reflect that agreed the way he writes the tale, he would have written it in a way that would have you feeling sorry for this endangered group, but how can you feel sorry for a group that kills hundreds of thousands of people? But I guess if he considered this oddity and many of the additional contradictions in this book, there would be no need to have written such a tale – and maybe he shouldn’t have written it because who needs another officially authorized adventure that doesn’t hold up to common sense! This Dershowitz guy is no John Grisham, although I’m sure he wishes he was!
Granted worse tales have been written, of course, but, while reading it, I couldn’t help wondering who Hollywood would cast to play this Ariel Sharon character, a man who is supposed to be the modern day leader of this land, and who has played the largest part in destroying persons “additional” people living on that land. He’s rumor has it that a huge man, and John Candy is no longer with us (God rest his soul), and even if he was, this character is not at all amusing, so it may have to be some lesser known stout man who is excellent at playing evil dictators or something.
Overall, something like this could never take place in real life and if he wants to write to keep one’s attention, he should try to at least write in such a way that is believable. If you really want to read excellent officially authorized adventures, you’re better off with Grisham. Or better yet, a more appealing adventure, perfect with wizardry and sorcery, would be the Harry Potter series.
