Malcolm X’s searing memoir belongs on the tiny shelf of fantastic autobiographies. The reasons are many: the blistering honesty with which he recounts his transformation from a bitter, self-destructive petty criminal into an articulate political liberal, the nonstop weight of his militant analysis of white racism, and his emphasis on self-respect and self-help for African Americans. And there’s the vividness with which he depicts black well loved culture–try as he might to criticize persons lindy hops at Boston’s Roseland dance hall from the perspective of his Muslim faith, he can’t help but make them sound pretty wonderful. These are but a few examples. The Autobiography of Malcolm X limns an archetypal journey from ignorance and despair to knowledge and spiritual awakening. When Malcolm tells coauthor Alex Haley, “People don’t realize how a man’s whole life can be changed by one book,” he voices the central belief underpinning every attempt to set down a personal tale as an example for others. Although many judge his ethic was directly opposed to Martin Luther King Jr.’s during the civil rights struggle of the ’60s, the two were not so different. Malcolm may have showed a most un-Christian distaste for loving his enemies, but he understood with King that like of God and like of self are the necessary first steps on the road to freedom. –Wendy Smith

i’ll admit the begging of the book is alright….but i’m in the middle, and i can barely end going…This book is a fantastic way to promote white racism…page after page of the white man being the devil…you can sum up the book thus far in a simple sentence…
“Malcom does drugs, finds “Allah,” and despises white people.”

A excellent example why one should not despise, because if you do you will not make it as Malcolm X did not make it. A real disappointment. a poor example of showing “change” and the such. Rage and despise gets you no where, as we can see.

First of all, what kind of autobiography is written by a name additional than the theme of the autobiography? That would be like me writing the autobiography of President Clinton. The proper word here is biography NOT autobiography. Poor Malcom. He spends an entire life learning the obvious. I was not impressed. Of course, rage is a dead end. Of course, the Muslims aren’t all they would like us to reflect they are. Of course, a life of petty crime is a dead end. If he had really shut up for a while and listened to additional people, he could have saved himself a lot of distress, and maybe still be alive. But some people are so dense they will not listen but need to hit their heads against the wall over and over again. These are the unteachable ones who need to reinvent the veer rather than borrow it.

I won’t call him the leader or call this work an autobiography, Malcolm X didn’t write anything, as a replacement for he did the only thing he was excellent at doing: Ran his mouth at Alex Haley.
Black youth are encouraged to read these ravings; sorry to say, when they place this book down, they are led to judge that all the meanderings, half-truths and outright lies within its pages are facts or in the least, well grounded opinions. To offset this problem an unbiased edition needs to be published, footnoted where Mistuh Malcolm throws out some “self-learned fact” or vents his contradictory philosophies, faulty because he still seethes hatred for whitey deep down.
As a side-note, I’ve noticed that nearly all the so-called “African-American Classics” have an average of 4 or 5 stars. I find it very suspicious — to say the least.
Is Amazon.com refusing to post most of the negative reviews of this book and others in this genre? After all, I’ve seen more negative reviews for the Holy Bible or the Quran or the Vedas. Yet, you want me to judge that this book or Iceberg Slim’s “Pimp: The Tale of My Life” are such well-crafted masterpieces of literature that they received only one or two 1 star/2 star reviews?
We don’t want to offend black folks, do would we Amazon?

Looking back, after reading this book, I notice that Malcolm X was a very appealing man with a very appealing life. But, the book itself is certainly not thrilling, it’s long, it drags on, and there are many unneeded things. Malcolm X had a controversial, but appealing life, but you could easily learn about it by watching the movie while saving a BUNCH of time.
