Product Description
“A shockingly imaginative graphic novel that captures the sense of adventure and marvel that surrounds a new arrival on the shores of a bright new city. Wordless, but with perfect narrative flow, Tan gives us a tale filled with cityscapes worthy of Winsor McCay.” — Jeff Smith, leader of Bone
“A magical river of strangers and their tales!” — Craig Thompson, leader of Blankets
“Magnificent.” — David Tiny, Caldecott Medalist
In a heartbreaking parting, a man gives his wife and daughter a last kiss and boards a steamship to cross the ocean. He’s embarking on the most painful yet vital journey of his life – he’s leaving home to erect a better future for his family tree. Shaun Tan evokes universal aspects of an immigrant’s experience through a singular work of the imagination. He does so using brilliantly clear and mesmerizing images. Because the main character can’t communicate in words, the book forgoes them too. But while the reader experiences the main character’s isolation, he also shares his essential joy.

This is a picture book with not a single word. So, to me it is not even a book but art baby book. If there is a tale, it is rather hard to know and dull. I am extremely disappointed, as I plotted to give this book as gift. Would not recommend this book. As for the quality of art, I cannot judge.

I bought this book for my honestly brainy teenage nephew’s birthday, who has loved additional graphic novels. I bought it because of the fantastic reviews but am not reasonably sure what to make of it. It’s about immigrants but there are also some puzzling rat-like pets and while the book is lacking words, there are puzzling scripts in some of the frames, clearly an invented language. I hope he enjoys it more than I did. It seemed more obtuse than necessary.

Appealing to adults as well as younger readers, the Arrival is a must-read book for anyone in Arizona or elsewhere. Shaun Tan’s art is perfectly executed, the tale is touching and universal using no language to convey a message of compassion and empathy for anyone forced to relocate in a new culture. With humor, creativity and invention, this remarkable book makes us experience what it feels to arrive in a new place where all is different from what we are used to: the food, the language, the every day objects and to find work and a place to live. I recommend it highly.

If you’ve ever had reservations about buying a “comic book/graphic novel,” throw them away this instant! This is a must treasure book. The art is not only gorgeous but evokes emotions to the highest degree. You’ll see fantastical lands, weird creatures, and everyday life jump out to capture your mind. Don’t miss out on this tale!

The tale is simple but touching. The rustic feel of the book is lots of fun. The artwork is inspiring. Give yourself a excellent hour to explore the tale.
