Terror in the Name of God: Why Religious Militants Kill

Product Description
For four years, Jessica Stern interviewed extremist members of three religions around the world: Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Traveling extensively—to refugee camps in Lebanon, to religious schools in Pakistan, to prisons in Amman, Asqelon, and Pensacola—she learned that the Islamic jihadi in the mountains of Pakistan and the Christian fundamentalist bomber in Oklahoma have much in common.
Based on her vast research, Stern lucidly clarifies how terrorist organizations are formed by opportunistic leaders who—using religion as both motivation and justification—recruit the disenfranchised. She depicts how moral vehemence is transformed into sophisticated organizations that strive for money, power, and attention.
Jessica Stern’s wide interaction with the faces behind the terror provide unprecedented insight into acts of inexplicable horror, and enable her to suggest how terrorism can most effectively be countered.
A crucial book on terrorism, Terror in the Name of God is a brilliant and thought-provoking work.

We’re tired. We know this is the 15 minutes for the mediocre political “scientists” and would-be experts. What a mint 9-11 has been for the ambulance chasers such as Stern.

More money being made on 9-11. There is a disconnect between right discourse and the race to get rich before Americans realize that 9-11 was precursor to the 21st century’s own bogus cold war. Russia had no ability to do much of anything to us, we now know that. The oil politicians allowed us 9-11.

Stern becomes yet another victim to the jurnalist urge to ‘know’ terrorism and murder. Lets simplify this. She looks at the ‘Zealots’(lets recall Zealots were jews who fought the Romans so her term is incorrect), Jews who have settled in the west bank and rumor has it that have not so nice things to say about their Muslim naighboors. But Stern wants us to compare these people, and Jerry Fallwell to a Muslim about to strap on a bomb. Lets compare here. The Jewish guy wears a flack jacket to get to work and guards his kids so they can go to school, he despises the terrorists and maybe he despises Palistinians but he is not a killer. Only one jew in the last 10 years has murdered Muslims in an act of terror and that was Dr. Baruch Goldstein(you can look him up I dont have room to tell his tale).
Now how many people did Stern interview that were about to go murder in the name of Christ? none. as a replacement for she wanted us to beleive that religious christian conservatives, alla Jerry Fallwell, were about to take up the sword for the new campaign but they ahdnt establish the sword yet(were they choosing between an Ar-15 and an AK-47???)
Stern then interviews some muslims who are about to strap on a bomb and go blow up some ‘infidels’ after the interview. She wants to explore thier souls and ‘know’ why they are prepared to die in order to help cleanse their country of despised christians and despised women who spectacle more then a finger.
Whats the line here Stern? That a born again baptists, a Jewish settler and a Muslim terrorist are the same. This book is the essential in moral equivilancy. Sterns point is that we americans also have terrorists, we need look no furhtur then the christian right. But this is fake. The christian right has committed no terrorist acts(unless you want to mark Mcveigh a christian then thats one). Stenr wasnt after the mcvieghs of the world though she wanted to show that christianity produces terrorists, yet she is incorrect. Judaism dont produce one onehundredth the number of terrorists that Islam does. THis is because, as Stern does not point out, Islam is very much intolerant in its militant form. Their are no Jewish terrorists, so she shouldnt have even included Jews in the book. She could have looked at Sihks who have killed in the name of god, but she was rumor has it that not open minded enough to realize they exist.
A terrible, rambling account that only justifies terror at the expense of christianity and Judaism.

There is no moral equivalence between Christianity and Islam. It sounds so clean and tidy, this thought that ‘fundamentalists’ of every stripe are treacherous. The only problem is that if a belief system is based on loving ones enemies, then a fundamentalist of such belief would be a very loving person, not a terrorist. Of course, there are past exceptions and a very few contemporary ones. People like to mention the Spanish Inquisition but fail to mention that more people are killed by Islamists in any agreed year than died in all 350 years of the Inquisition. I am amazed by these people who search high and low, far and wide to find some nerdy kooks who “plot to” “want to” were going to” do some terrible thing when Islamic terrorists by the hundreds of thousands are committing acts of terrorism, large and tiny, in 30 countries around the world. And within 10 miles of most American homes there is probably a Muslim family tree sending his check every month to support the charity/terrorist network. Oh yes, but what about the KKK? A few impotent bigots in Alabama and one or two lone gunmen here are there are not equivalent in severity, number, motive, or scope to the cancer of Islamic terror.
There simply is no moral equivalence between Islam and Christianity, fundamentalist or otherwise. People have committed atrocities in the name of the Christian God but such acts (comparatively minute in scope compared to Islamic aggression) place the terrorist at odds with Christian orthodoxy. You cannot be a excellent Christian and kill abortion doctors. The act of murder is forbidden and therefore the terrorist is no better than the abortionist. On the contrary a Muslim can and must participate in violent Jihad, either personally or through the financial support of it, according to most schools of thought within Islam. If a Muslim blows up a bus full of Jews, he is a hero and a martyr and a very excellent Muslim.
The Quran implores its legions, “make war on the infidels who dwell around you.” Sura 9:123. Such verses are establish throughout the Quran while there are no such incitements to violence in the New Tribute but rather admonishments to humility, charity, and forgiveness. I know hundreds of Christian fundamentalists. Even the slightest suggestion of extremist thought would not be tolerated among them. The leader must be a practitioner of yoga, because she has twisted herself and this book into a pretzel of faulty logic and research.
Just to mention the atrocities of one tiny drop in the river of blood that is Islam, one can consider the Danish cartoons furor. Estimates are that more than 250 people were killed and many buildings bombed and burned as a result of the cartoons. What was the Christian response to a much more offensive product though equally blasphemous to Christians–The Davinci Code? The result was a robust public discussion that caused millions of the faithful to read the book to see and choose for themselves. It is fine to talk about the religious roots of terror. They are not hard to find. Open the Quran and read how a Muslim will be rewarded for the horrific murder and dismemberment of innocent women, men, and children. Make that case, but place Christians out of it.

Jessica Stern, in her never ending non-battle against the forces of darkness, wanders away from her tough movie role in The Peacemaker to bring a shameless message of moral equivalency and Kennedy School approved economic determinism to her analysis of the post Sept. 11th explosion of Islamic Militancy. It’s as though she wrote a book on wife battering and devoted half her efforts chronicling the epidemic of wives beating their husbands. But, of course, in the company of Mr. Ignatieff and Ms. Powers, this sort of equivo-babble is mandatory along the banks of the Charles.
Therefore, in Jessica’s world, a few demented Faithful of the Temple Mount (numbering at most a few hundred) become the moral equivalent of the approximately 100 million fanatical muslims seeking to install the Caliphate around the globe. Freaked-out millenial skinheads spending most of their time in pay toilets in Idaho pose as fantastic a danger as the millions who support Islamic “charities” (whose chief work is more regularly than not handouts of high explosives). Ms. Stern, for all her legwork among the mad, draws exactly the incorrect conclusions. It’s a war, my dear. And it won’t be won by flying in Doctors Lacking Limits to treat the 43rd son of Sheik Bandar.
