Hi All,
I will make this very quick and I reflect to the point.
I really liked Alastair Reynolds previous novels and he is to be praised indeed for them. I bought this new book based on his additional novels.
In my opinion this is a terrible book and does not really have much hard science fiction in it. Sometimes this can be excellent thing but not here.
I gave it up to the half way point to pickup and then nonstop to read in the hope it did.
It did not….
I would recommend giving this one a miss as I establish it very hard work.

I’ve read every one of Alastair Reynolds’ books as well as many of his fleeting tales and the man has NEVER disapointed.
As far as I’m concerned, he could write the phone book and I would rush out and buy it.
If you delight in hard sci-fi, Reynolds is a must.
‘Nuff said.

I establish this novel disappointing in comparison to Mr. Reynolds’ past works. To me, this read like a swords and sorcery fantasy novel with a thin science fiction veneer. Granted, all science fiction is fantastical, but I expected more.

Reynolds gives us a weird universe. In it “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.” The skullboys (They appear to be related to the Reavers of “Serenity”.)they look and act just like their name sounds; on the additional hand, there are the vorgs, carnivorous cyborgs, that suck human frontal lobes dry. The skullboys trade prisoners for drugs with the vorgs, and then there is Nimcha, a tectomancer, who can mentally alter planetary energy flows. If you’ve ever gone on the Cyclone in Coney Island, you know that first half–what so scary about this?–of the ride, sets you up for the second half–Oh Shoot! Enough said.

Alistair Reynolds has been a rock star as far as the new generation of science fiction writers, with a whole string of really brilliant books to his credit… But this book was a letdown. I slogged through it but it just wasn’t very appealing or engaging and didn’t feel innovative at all. More like a not-very-excellent tribute to China Mieville.
