Product Description
Smart gardeners know that soil is anything but an inert substance. Healthy soil is teeming with life — not just earthworms and insects, but a staggering multitude of bacteria, fungi, and additional microorganisms. When we use compound fertilizers, we injure the microbial life that sustains healthy plants, and thus become increasingly dependent on an arsenal of artificial substances, many of them toxic to humans as well as additional forms of life. But there is an alternative to this vicious circle: to garden in a way that strengthens, rather than destroys, the soil food web — the complex world of soil-dwelling organisms whose interactions make a nurturing environment for plants. By eschewing jargon and overly technical language, the authors make the benefits of refining the soil food web available to a wide audience, from devotees of organic farming techniques to weekend gardeners who simply want to grow healthy, vigorous plants lacking resorting to chemicals.

I have not yet read the book, so I have no input on the book at this time. Thank you.

I expected to like this book, but when they clarified pH backward it made me marvel what else is incorrect in this book. Quote “Adding OH- to the solution lowers the pH (that is soil is increasingly acidic).

This book is not for everyone. The first half as the leader refers to it is a science book in every meaning. Details, facts, vocabulary are all present. I’ve had a honest amount of science in college but never in this area. I’ll admit it was a bit slow at the start. But once you get to the second half it all falls into place. When he starts to chat about different composts, you know what is in them, what purpose they serve, because he’s already agreed you the background.
Cons not for everyone.

In an interview, Jeff Lowenfels had made a comment about using Miracle-Gro products. Then in introducing this book, Teaming with Microbes, stated that he would never use it again. My mind questioned me “Why?”, and so the book was immediately ordered, received, and read. If you don’t know the harm that synthetic fertilizers are doing to your soil and gardens, then you too need to read this book. Not very entertaining like reading a Jerry Baker Garden Tonics Book, but very informative of how to keep your soil healthy. High School biology clarified in lamens terms.
