The format does not work well for this. Huge yarn and large hooks negate the delicacy of what crochet can be. The projects are hideous and I would not want to learn from this book. Waste of excellent money

The Teach Yourself Visually title suggests that the photos will be huge enough and of excellent enough resolution to learn from. They aren’t. I bought this book because I want to make a granny square afghan and I wasn’t satisfied with my transition from one to color to another so I was looking for guidance on that (plus all the additional things I could learn from it). When this book arrived I immediately opened the pointer and looked for an entry on joining a new color. Nothing. The book has one explanation on joining a new color, and no doubt it is suitable in some cases, but not in mine. I do not recommend this book.

Sorry to say, the book leaves out key photos and explanations. Close-ups of parts of each stitch would have made things much clearer.
For example, I was able to make a slip stitch, a chain stitch, and a foundation chain (I reflect), but at that point, the book instructs the reader to turn the piece. It doesn’t clarify or show a picture of what it means to turn the piece. Work from the back of the chain? Turn how you’re holding it in your hand? This book didn’t help me know.
Save yourself the money. There’s plenty of better information–with clearer pictures–available for free on the Web.

I bought this book and haven’t yet seen the print version, but I can tell you that the supposed “upgrade” to a digital version is unreadable. The page images are fuzzy so that the text is illegible in some instances. For a book where it’s really vital to see the details, this is unacceptable. I’ve questioned Amazon for a refund and I won’t be ordering any more “upgrades.”
So this review isn’t about the substance of the book (I’ll know more about that when I get the paper copy). It’s about the production of the digital version.

This book is fantastic for persons of us who learn more quickly by having visual examples.
