As a pastor effective in a neighborhood with the highest concentration of murderous gang activity in Los Angeles, Gregory Boyle made an organization to provide jobs, job training, and encouragement so that young people could work together and learn the mutual respect that comes from collaboration. Tattoos on the Heart is a breathtaking series of parables distilled from his twenty years in the barrio. Arranged by theme and filled with sparkling humor and glowing generosity, these essays offer a stirring look at how full our lives could be if we could find the joy in loving others and in being loved unconditionally. From giant, tattooed Cesar, shopping at JCPenney fresh out of prison, we learn how to feel worthy of God’s like. From ten-year-ancient Lula we learn the importance of being known and acknowledged. From Pedro we know the kind of patience necessary to rescue a name from the darkness. In each chapter we benefit from Boyle’s wonderful, hard-earned wisdom. Inspired by faith but applicable to anyone trying to be excellent, these personal, unflinching tales are full of surprising revelations and observations of the community in which Boyle works and of the many lives he has helped save.
Erudite, down-to-planet, and utterly heartening, these essays about universal kinship and redemption are moving examples of the power of unconditional like in hard times and the importance of fighting despair. With Gregory Boyle’s guidance, we can admit our own wounds in the broken lives and daunting struggles of the men and women in these parables and learn to find joy in all of the people around us. Tattoos on the Heart reminds us that no life is less valuable than another.

Father Greg’s book speaks to the heart of the work, and is essential reading for anyone who chooses to “stand outside the circle” with persons who have no choice. His words are hopeful, and affirming, and necessary for anyone who seeks to make a difference….one at a time. Father Greg is a well-educated and well-read Jesuit, and his tales are viewed through more than one lens: the spiritual, the intellectual, and the humorous. Its a quick read, but one to be savored. I will never reflect about high school biology again lacking thinking of “digesting the frog”, and I will never forget the enduring hope and compassion of Father Greg and his “homies”.

I have read and reread Father Gregory Boyles book and would highly recommend it. As a sculptor of hunanitarians with sculptures in various public places, he is one who I would be delighted to add to my series of sculptures of people who in the most hard situations make nonviolent social change through like and compassion for others. This book is one I am buying multiple copies of as gifts for friends. It is a reminder to remember that in every life that goes astray there has been some pain that has not healed. Father Boyle and his compassionate heart and team of helpers have establish ways to help in the healing process with others. It is a right example of seeing the best in others, and assisting their healing. In my mind a must read. Meera Censor

Greg Boyle’s insight into gang life is at once remarkably personal and incredibly poetic. He shares years of experience in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the country with tales that overflow with humanity and like. It’s an epic read that I just couldn’t place down.

After reading this book, I am a different person. I read each of the tales, I cried and laughed. It made me reflect about how
easily I dismiss people and demonize them when I really don’t really know them. The last tale about Chico broke my heart. The book
is written in a poetic style and it touched my heart. I will be more compassionate to the students that I teach that are struggling.
