As high society’s social calendar opens up and the Season draws to a close, London is gripped by dread. A name has taken to stalking women of the night and painting the town red…in their blood. The name on everyone’s lips seems to be “Jack the Ripper” – and as a result, the name on Queen Victoria’s lips is Phantomhive. Summoned to London to clean up the mess made by this madman, Ciel Phantomhive arrives with Sebastian, his extraordinary butler, at his side to pour him tea, polish his silver, and…investigate a serial killer. And with the aid (and occasional interference) of a few of the Phantomhive house’s copious acquaintances, small stands in the way of the young earl getting to the bottom of this mystery. It’s a JENaissance! The New York Times bestselling leader of Pretty in Plaid gets her culture on.

Readers have followed Jen Lancaster through job loss, sucky city living, weight loss attempts, and 1980s nostalgia. Now Jen chronicles her efforts to achieve cultural enlightenment, with some hilarious missteps and genuine moments of inspiration along the way. And she does so by any means necessary: reading canonical literature, viewing classic films, attending the opera, researching artisan cheeses, and even enrolling in etiquette classes to improve her social graces.

In Jen’s confront is a crack team of experts, including Page Six socialites, gourmet chefs, an opera aficionado, and a master sommelier. She may learn that well-regarded, high-priced stinky cheese tastes exactly as terrible as it smells, and that her like for Kraft American Singles is forever. But one thing’s for certain: Eliza Doolittle’s got nothing on Jen Lancaster-and failure is an option.Amazon.com Review

Jen Lancaster and Dave Barry: Leader One-on-One

The New York Times has pronounced Dave Barry “the most amusing man in America.” But of course that could have been on a slow news day when there wasn’t much else fit to print. Right, his bestselling collections of columns are legendary, but it is his wholly original books that reveal him as an American icon, like I’ll Mature When I’m Dead. He wrote for Humor Hotel and Jen Lancaster eventually took over his nationally syndicated humor column. Dave Barry Read on to see Dave Barry’s questions for Jen Lancaster, or turn the tables to see what he questioned her.

Dave: Which has a privileged IQ: gravel or the cast of Jersey Shore?

Jen: On the surface, gravel clearly seems to have the edge. Gravel’s managed to exist for thousands of years lacking ever once having ongoing a bar fight when a name looked at its Ed Hardy T-shirt amusing. But, after the episode where Pauly D. went swimming and emerged from under the water with every hair still firmly in place, I’m forced to declare Jersey Shore the winner. The kind of civil/compound engineering it takes to hold that ’do in place is nothing fleeting of genius.

Dave: What can we, as a nation, do about the Kardashians?

Jen: One word: caning.

Dave: Do you ever watch Dog the Gift Hunter? If so, do you agree that he would be a really fun United States senator?

Jen: I like Dog and judge he’d be a fantastic senator. He’s clever, he’s well-organized, he’s no-nonsense, and he’s not worried to knock a few heads together if needed. He’s exactly what this country needs. Plus, I’d like Mr. Dog to Go to Washington if for no reason additional than to see his wife dressed up like Jackie O while on the battle trail. (The caveat is I’m from Illinois and most of our living governors are felons, so it’s possible my standards aren’t terribly high.)

Dave: How come women are so excellent at appearing to not be thinking about sex?

Jen: Because we’re the ones in charge of doling it out, so there’s no guesswork involved on our part. Ergo, we can reflect about more vital stuff. Like handbags.

Dave: Like many men, I have four kinds of shoes: 1) black shoes, 2) brown shoes, 3) sneakers 4) backup sneakers. Do I need more? What should they be?

Jen: I reject the premise of this question because whereas most men own four pair of shoes, they own nine different kinds of hammers. Framing? Claw? Tack? Ball-peen? Any woman worth her salt knows that nearly all household repairs can be accomplished with one of two tools—a butter knife or the heel of a loafer. Jen Lancaster

Dave: Do you reflect ketchup has to be kept in the refrigerator? Why?

Jen: Yes, but less for food safety concerns and more because we don’t want to hurt the self-esteem of the additional condiments. (Mayonnaise can be so self-conscious.)

Dave: Are cats malicious, or really the spawn of Satan?

Jen: Um, cats are wonderful and loving small creatures who live to make us pleased, and they only barf in our shoes and scratch the bejesus out of our new ottomans and trip us at the top of the stairs to demonstrate exactly how special we are to them. They are in no way, shape, or form evil, meaning they would never trap me and both of my dogs in my office, causing me to send out cryptic interview answers hoping desperately the reader will properly interpret them and SEND HELP.

Written on the brink of World War II, Rebecca West’s classic examination of the history, people, and politics of Yugoslavia illuminates a region that is still a focus of international concern. A magnificent blend of travel journal, cultural commentary, and past insight, Black Lamb and Grey Falcon probes the troubled history of the Balkans and the uneasy relationships among its ethnic groups. The landscape and the people of Yugoslavia are brilliantly experimental as West untangles the tensions that rule the country’s history as well as its daily life.Amazon.com Review
Part travelogue, part history, part like letter on a thousand-page scale, Rebecca West’s Black Lamb and Grey Falcon is a genre-bending masterwork written in elegant prose. But what makes it so unlikely to be confused with any additional book of history, politics, or culture–with, in fact, any additional book–is its unashamed depth of feeling: reflect The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire crossed with Let Us Now Praise Legendary Men. West visited Yugoslavia for the first time in 1936. What she saw there affected her so much that she had to return–partly, she writes, because it most resembled “the country I have permanently seen between sleeping and waking,” and partly because “it was like alternative up a strand of wool that would lead me out of a labyrinth in which, to my surprise, I had establish myself immured.” Black Lamb is the chronicle of her travels, but above all it is West following that strand of wool: through countless past digressions; through winding narratives of battles, slavery, and assassinations; through Shakespeare and Augustine and into the very heart of human shortcoming.

West wrote on the brink of World War II, when she was “already convinced of the inevitability of the second Anglo-German war.” The resulting book is colored by that impending conflict, and by West’s search for universals amid the complex particulars of Balkan history. In the end, she saw the region’s doom–and our own–in a double infatuation with sacrifice, the “black lamb and grey falcon” of her title. It’s the tale of Abraham and Isaac lacking the last-minute reprieve: persons who despise are all too ready to martyr the innocent in order to procure their own advantage, and the innocent themselves are all too keen to be martyred. To West, in 1941, “the whole world is a vast Kossovo, an terrible blood-logged unadorned.” Sorry to say, small has happened since then to prove her incorrect. –Mary Park

Under the Black Flag: The Romance and the Reality of Life Among the Pirates

Product Description
ffers this rollicking account of the golden age of piracy, full of history, anecdote, and adventure. Here are right tales of Blackbeard, Henry Morgan, Captain Kidd, and of the female pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read. “Entirely engaging and informative . . . a witty, spirited book.”–Jonathan Yardley, The Washington Post. Maps and photos.Amazon.com Review
Though literature, films, and folklore have romanticized pirates as gallant seaman who hunted for treasure in exotic locales, David Cordingly, a ex- curator at the National Maritime Museum in England, reveals the facts behind the legends of such outlaws as Captain Kidd, Blackbeard, and Calico Jack. Even tales about buried treasure are fictitious, he says, yet still the myth remains. Though pirate captains were regularly sadistic villains and crews endured barbarous tortures, were constantly threatened with the possibility of death by hanging, drowning in a storm, or extant a shipwreck on a hostile coast, pirates are still idealized. Cordingly examines why the myth of the romance of piratehood endures and why so few lived out their days in luxury on the riches they had plundered.

Now a young writer has arrived at Swagger’s door with some penetrating and troubling questions. What really happened that long-ago Arkansas night? The powers that be don’t want that question answered, but Swagger, to his surprise, finds that he does — even if it means having to use his long-abandoned combat skills and cunning to find out. Like the infrared “black light” that exposes a sniper’s target in the night, Swagger homes in on the dark facts desperate to keep the secret of his father’s murder buried.
