Sophie Hegel is a shy New York lawyer from tiny-town Florence Arizona, known not for the Renaissance but for housing a large prison. She’s just graduated from Yale Law School and landed her first job when, one evening she feels a fist-like ball form at the base of her throat. Diagnosed with the psychological condition Globus Sensate, this “fist-ball” wreaks havoc on her life, causing difficulty eating, language, and eventually breathing. With a cast of characters that includes a pornographer father, a sister with a knack for getting knocked up by denizens of the town pen, a tough-talking fashion maven, a painter of male nudes, an eccentric Sing Sing-residing client and a bevy of privileged Manhattan attorneys and judges, Swallow is a dark comedy about the distance that can separate fathers and daughters, and about a young woman’s struggle to survive in a world of pedigreed professionals for which she has no preparation. All I can say of this book is that…it was not excellent. I establish the character tedious and basically sappy. The only joy I achieved from reading this novel was the ending…and even that was a bit of a stretch.
If the leader chooses to publish another novel, I will not read it.

After reading reasonably a few reviews, I was expecting a excellent book and I was sorely disappointed. The female lead became so annoying that I became indifferent to her plight/tale. It took 3/4 of the book for her finally question her therapist why he thinks she has distress swallowing and that was the ONLY reason I finished the book.
The only bright part of the book were Sophie’s friends. I loved Francie and Thom, there were the only redeeming characters here and that’s not adage much, as it doesn’t take a lot to be more appealing that Sophie or her boyfriend.
I wasted about 3 hours of my life reading this book that I will never get back.

Boy, did I have a hard time finishing this book. I really disliked Sophie, primarily because the first 2/3 of the book was only dedicated to her whining and doing nearly nothing about the fact that she couldn’t swallow. I realize people can be this insecure and passive, but I don’t delight in reading about it.
The last 1/4 of the book got a small appealing as Sophie developed a tiny bit of spine. I finally finished it, but for me it was a huge waste of time.

Sophie Hegel is a young lawyer living in New York City. After graduating from Yale Law School and securing her first real job, Sophie is proposed to by her decade older boyfriend, Stephen. While he is proposing, Sophie feels something in her throat, described as a fist-ball, lodging her breathing. From that moment, the fist-ball keeps appearing during vital times in Sophie’s life, such as representing clients and meeting additional lawyers. Sophie tries therapy to know what is happening to her, as the fist-ball is causing her to be unable to eat or drink. When the therapist talks about her childhood, Sophie dredges up painful memories about her father, who films pornography movies., and the relationship she has with her mother and sister. The therapist diagnoses Sophie with a psychosomatic illness called Globus Sensate, and Sophie must deal with her issues in order to overcome this disease. ‘
Swallow, the debut by Tonya Plank, is an appealing tale. It took me awhile to grasp the concept that there was an imaginary fist-ball constantly in the main characters throat. I really didn’t know where the tale was going. Once I dove deeper in, I could see how her childhood left damaging psychological distress on her adult life, and ongoing rooting for the character to overcome and make it. Swallow is marked as dark comedy, but I don’t see anything comedic about the tale. I thought it was extremely edgy and dark, and I loved Plank’s writing. I reflect readers should give this novel a chance, even though the synopsis may see a small far-out, the tale is meaningful.

Swallow isn’t a book I would typically read, but a friend of mine questioned me to read it. Reading books that friends fervently recommend makes me kind of fidgety, because I usually don’t like the book as much as the friend does and it makes for some very awkward moments. But I try to be a nice guy, so I gave it a shot.
Way to go Tonya Plank! Fantastic entry into the world of writing. You can really write!!!
I suppose my mind is in the gutter, because I was expecting something completely different based on the book’s title. My terrible. But as a replacement for of a trashy novel, it’s a very thoughtful tale about a young professional female attorney living in New York struggling with her white trash background. (Don’t fight it girl–I can personally attest to a much more pleased life after embracing my redneck roots).
The pressures of her life and her situation in the huge city manifest themselves in an odd way and turn into an eating disorder (thus the title).
Enough about the tale; I don’t like to gyp the plot too much. You’ll have to read it yourself. But I’d like to gush about the writing a small more. Some writers write comfortably and some seem completely unnatural. I like Tonya Plank’s writing. It’s comfortable like a pair of sweats, but she makes a dissonance that I like (weird, I know). This comes from the fact that the situation in the tale is just SO messed up, but the writing style and attitude of the protagonist are just so doggone upbeat. How can that poor girl be so cute and lovable when her life is such a mess?
So I’m glad my friend coerced me into reading Swallow. It was well worth it. I’ll keep an eye out for more books from Tonya Plank in the future. Hopefully this is the first book in a long writing career.
