Let’s get this straight: I’m the kind of person that doesn’t laugh at most things aimed at being amusing (sitcoms, stand-up acts), and I also don’t like reading froufrou, cliche, feel-excellent material. I’d honestly rather read about neurological pathways in the body than sit down and watch an episode of Seinfeld or Scrubs….
….I could not place this book down.
Seriously. After I realized I was doing the literary equivalent of reading all seven Harry Potters in a month time frame, I forced myself to slow down so I could delight in every piece in the book. The hilarious drawings. The spot-on accuracy Acuff has made in his observations about Christians and the Church. His deep insight into faith with his serious Wednesday material. It’s all awesome. He never comes across as trying to hard, has courage to explore some areas typically avoided by Christians, and is wonderfully talented at explaining the basic tenets of our faith in a manner that is accessible yet powerful. I plot on keeping my copy in my car for my friends to read whenever we drive around, and will probably donate a copy to our local library system. Praise God for blessing Jon Acuff with talent in communication and for his willingness to open up and share with us.

I had never read the “Stuff Christians Like” blog. I had never even heard of it until [...] sent me an email adage “Stuff Christians Like” was the free audiobook download of the month for April. After listening to some of it I chose I had to own a copy of the book as well. It is hilarious. This has quickly become one of my favorite books. Acuff does a fantastic job of poking fun at things that we as Christians do while including himself in the same group. What makes it so amusing is that I have done a lot of these things myself so I know exactly what he’s talking about.
Anyway, I would highly recommend this book.

You don’t have to be a Christian to read Stuff Christians Like (SCL) and delight in it. It even says so in the book. This book, written by John Acuff, is a collection of ancient and new essays from the immensely well loved Stuff Christians Like blog. Acuff is a Christian satirist, gifted with remarkable wit and a fantastic sense of humor. In the book he discusses (and stiffly mocks) the many oddities of being a Christian and the weird situations we find ourselves in in our daily lives.
You know you’re in for a ride when the first chapter is titled “Status Honeymoon Sex Slightly Greater Than the Second Coming.” And this is only the beginning. Acuff addresses prayer, God, church, work, like, alcohol, friendship, witnessing, metrosexual worship leaders, and practically anything else you can reflect of. Need to know how to deal with your unruly kids? Check. Looking to find out if your “Christian” friend drinks a small? Check. Need an excuse to watch Family tree Guy to be culturally significant? Check.
The best thing about the book, though, was the dead-on sense of humor when dealing with awkward, normal Christian things. Acuff is eccentric and belittling, enough to the point that he’s received despise mail from people thinking he’s serious. His honesty is compelling. He’s never shy about building fun of himself or pointing out the many ways he’s screwed up. The way his mind works (especially when thinking of allegories or descriptions) is hysterical. At one point I burst out laughing so hard that I was worried people around me would reflect I was crying.
There are hundreds of small lines that make this book worth reading. Here are a few of my favorites:
-Stuff Christians Like: The Book CS Lewis Would Have Written If He Had Been 40% More Sarcastic or 100% Less Dead.
-”Judging Fundamentalists for being Judgmental”
-…why would I hire a full-time youth minister when I can get a real effective traffic light for only $378?
-I ongoing thinking about the devil. He’s at home, sitting in a chair by a never ending fire of sulfur and sorrow, eating a deviled egg. He’s reading The DaVinci Code when a name knocks on his door.
Perhaps these don’t seems amusing to you, but that could be because you have no context. Trust me. This book is hilarious, and I can’t recommend it more for anyone who wants a glimpse into the life of an average American Christian.
Another appealing thing is the reader can easily see the like Acuff has for God. It’s in the words he writes, but he does it lacking thumping you over the head. There’s something right about his ministry, and his book/blog are impacting people. Every Wednesday on his blog he does a serious essay, and the Stuff Christians Like book contains a few of these serious essays in the last chapter. All are worth the read.
If this isn’t enough to make you want to read the book, then I’ve got one thing left for you. The opening of the Introduction: “If you buy this book, God will make you rich.” That should do it.
So there you have it. And if you already don’t follow the SCL blog, check it out. I really can’t recommend it anymore.
Razzle-dazzle!

This book should come with a warning. “NOT INTENDED FOR BEDTIME READING”
Jon Acuff’s book “Stuff Christians Like” is packed so full of humor that long after you place it down you are still laughing out loud.
The first 10 pages had me laughing so hard I was crying building it impossible for my tired spouse to get any sleep. I was still
laughing long after the light were out.
Jon’s quick wit and satirical look at church life will make even the strongest atheist want to become a Christian so Jon will write
something amusing about them too.
