Space Prison (original title: The Survivors) – A ship heading from Planet to Athena, a planet 500 light years away, is suddenly attacked by the Gerns, an alien empire in its expansion phase. People aboard are divided by the invaders into Slaves and Rejects. The ex- to work under Gern’s mandate on Athena, the latter to stay in the nearest Planet-like planet, called Ragnarok and to be later returned to their mother planet.
Ragnarok, but, turns out to be an inhospitable world, populated by deadly, aggressive creatures. The novels follows the stranded humans through several generations as they try to survive there. Comic book writer Warren Ellis counts the novel as one of his early favorites, writing, “I must have read that book twenty times. It just rips along (in many senses of the word “rips”), as openly gleeful as a fleeting genre book should be.”

A really excellent space opera,worth the read.My only critic to fleeting a tale which should of fleshed out more details as you go from generation to generation.

What a surprise! I expected a humdrum junior space opera and got a terrific, well developed, alien survival tale. I hope to read more from Mr. Godwin.

I agree with the previous reviewer. This is fantastic sci-fi writing. Epic storytelling that is full of action and adventure. There are also reasonably a few surprises along the way. The pulpy name of the novel might turn off some, but it’s really not reflective of the how excellent the tale really is. I know it was re-unrestricted a couple of years ago as “The Survivors” and that name is more accurate.
The tale and plot are several notches above most writing of the period and this now one of my favorite books. They should try to make a movie out of this….

I stumbled across this book by manufacturing accident and thought it sounded appealing. I was pleasantly surprised by what a fantastic tale this is. Yes, it’s science fiction, but it’s so much more. I imagine I’ll read this book again now and then.
