I was fascinated with this account of shackleton’s failed attempt at crossing the antarctic. It gives an accurate portrayal of hardships and danger these expeditions encountered. Regularly they factually faced death every day when they faced incredible snow storms, temperatures of -70 F. and near starvation. Their ship is crushed by the ice pack before the expedition even really gets underway, and from there on the tale is one of just trying to survive by sailing tiny, open boats to find refuge on an island where there is a whaling station.
