Product Description
Leopold Bruise King has been raised in a family tree shattered—and shadowed—by tragedy. Lonely and adrift, he searches for something to sustain him and finds it among a tightly knit group of high school outsiders. Extant marriages pleased and troubled, unrequited likes and unspoken longings, hard-won successes and devastating breakdowns, as well as Charleston, South Carolina’s dark legacy of racism and class divisions, these friends will suffer until a final test forces them to face something none of them are prepared for.
Spanning two turbulent decades, South of Broad is Pat Conroy at his finest: a masterpiece from a fantastic American writer whose passion for life and language knows no bounds.

The following is a letter I wrote to Pat Conroy and posted on his blog.
Dear Mr. Conroy:
Your words are to my soul like a cardio vascular machine is to my body. My heart is exercised by the feelings invoked from your phrasing.
I can never tire of reading your sentences. I thought I would be when I heard about South of Broad. How could it ever be placed on the same shelf as Beach Composition, Prince of Tides and all your additional books?
But it has. It matches the pathos and the grandeur of your past works.
Thank you. Thank you for giving us another book with a tale and not another cook book.
It made perfect sense that you would write a cook book agreed the succulent details included in your past tales, but I prefer reading over cooking any day.
After reading My Losing Season I was worried I’d never read another book by you. And now I have and my life is once again charged with awe at its tale.
Ever since Gone with the Wind, I have been smitten by The South. Then after reading your books I fell in like with The South. Yet I like my neighborhood and can’t imagine ever parting from it in this life time. I feel the same way about jungle Hills Gardens as Toad does about Charleston. I hope someday to share that like with readers such as you have.
If there was ever another book to be added to the Bible it would be one of yours.

I have been a Conroy fan for years. I adore every aspect of his talent and writing.
I feel crappy telling you this book kinda stinks. I can hear you yell at me “Oh! And I guess you can do better!”
To which I answer: “No, I can’t”
I absolutely HATE it when an leader embellishes a child with adult emotions and characteristics. Most of this book does this I really despise it, A nineteen year ancient simply does not talk and reflect like a 50 year ancient. It just doesn’t work.
I was born and raised int he south, and even spent several years in Charlston, and Conroy’s loving description of this town are spot on. But that’s really the only thing that rings right about this book.
An okay book, but wait on the paperback.
I like you Pat, but chill out on the undeserving maturity please.

I ordered a book for a friend to be delivered directly to her but questioned to have it deliver after Jan 5/2010. Today is Jan 23 and it has not been delivered yet and the seller will not respond to my email messages. I am not pleased!

I like Charleston and have spent many wonderful days there enjoying the town and the food and the hospitality. One of my best friends lives there in the historic district. Conroy has written his view of Charleston ( a town he claims to like) and made it sound like a human garbage dump. His description of the people and their attitudes and, especially his language, are terrible. I do not know why a a noted writer like Conroy can not write a book about something that he supposedly likes lacking using all of the terrible and filthy language that fill the pages of this book. I would certainly not recommend this book to anyone that I know.Fellowes 32197 Powershred SB-97Cs Shredder
