Product Description
Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth, and what follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there’s still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.
This coming-of-age right tale is sure to resonate with anyone who has ever been in middle school, and especially persons who have ever had a bit of their own dental drama.

Raina wants nothing more than to be a normal sixth-grader, and her thought of that does NOT include having braces. But braces are her destiny, and that’s only the beginning of her dental drama. A fall leaves her missing her two front teeth, and the next four years bring a circus of braces, headgear, fake teeth, and surgery, all in the quest for a normal smile. On top of that, Raina is also dealing with family tree, school, boys, and confusion with what right friendship entails. //Smile// is a deceitfully normal coming-of-age tale, one that a surprising number of younger readers will find themselves identifying with. Raina could be any young woman, and the leader, who based this tale on her own struggles, truly manages to bring her younger self to life through her drawings. A fun, uplifting read, with a wonderfully pleased conclusion.

Raina is struggling with one point aspect of her life… her smile. Having to get braces, she’s dreading having to be a brace face, metal mouth – anything you want to mark it. But, it’s her smile, especially her teeth, that will haunt her all the way through middle school and up into high school.
From having them knocked out, to wearing head gear, to even having to get a retainer with two fake front teeth. To get that perfect smile it’s going to be a long journey… and a very painful one, at that.
Along the way, social problems continue to follow Raina. From crushing on a younger guy, to getting that athlete to notice her, to even standing up for herself after she’s had enough of the humiliation, Raina discovers who she is, how she shouldn’t change anything about herself, and that right friends would never make or place you in awkward situations.
Accompanied by colorful pictures, a cute and realistic storyline, and a main character that any person will be able to identify with, SMILE by Raina Telgemeier does one thing especially well… it makes the reader smile!
Many of us have veteran getting braces, feeling the intense pain when we want that bite of the burger we can’t have just yet. Nearly all of us can know what it’s like when you want to break apart from the not-so-fantastic friends we’ve had. Telgemeier does a fantastic job in capturing the right essence and emotions of a person going through changes.
SMILE is one book you’ll want your kids to read… and the one you’ll want to read yourself!
