Product Description
Mende Nazer had an idyllic early childhood with her loving family tree in a tiny village in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan, until she was cruelly kidnapped by the Mujahidin. She was kept as a domestic slave by a woman in Khartoum lacking any pay or a single day off. Mende endured this harsh and lonely being lacking knowing whether her family tree was alive or dead, for seven long years. In the spring of 2000 Mende was passed on by her master, like a bundle, to a relative in London. Eventually she managed to make contact with additional Nuba exiles who, with British journalist and filmmaker Damien Lewis, helped her escape to freedom. In 2002 she was awarded the Human Rights Award by CECRA, the Spanish Coalition Against Slavery for her work in building slavery a public issue.

Parts of this book were too graphic for me. I can’t judge what women in some parts of the world have to suffer. I couldn’t end it.

Slave, is a book which is a must read if you want to realize the hypocrisy of the Muslim world and Arab culture.
It is also the tale of courage and bravery.
Everyone who reads it will appreciate their freedoms.

This is a very simple read. The leader did a fantastic job of painting a picture of what she went through. I have been to Sudan twice so it was a fantastic way for me to get a closer look at what these people have been through. I loved it when she gave us the arabic words for certain things. I commend Mende for being able to go forwards with a successful life.

The most tragic thing about this book is that the entire thing has played out over the last ten years.
The prose flows very well and makes this an simple read, but it’s the only thing that is simple about this book. The theme matter stirred me to tears.
The authors do a wonderful job depicted the early pleased childhood of Nazer, which is a perfect contrast to the violence she endures in slavery.
The book treats the topics of female genital mutilation, slavery, physical, verbal, and emotional abuse with a rawness that makes you know exactly what this courageous woman endured during her enslavement.
