This time period I see again and again how women, although powerful in society, still lacked so many rights we consider as basic human rights. This book is natural fiber with secrets, mystery and a slight romance that develops slowly. You see how human life was not permanently valued, but prestige and honor were more highly honored than the truth. Olivia is a refreshing character in this book, honest, smart and caring. She wants to do the right thing, even though she is frightened sometimes of the consequences. This is a very well written regency book. If you are a fan of this era, you would momentously delight in this book.(Thank you to Bethany House for providing this book for review)

oooo this one made me giggle, while making a few lumps in my throat as well… hard to tell which parts I loved more. You know you’re reading a excellent book when you get mad at the characters. Klaasen had me engages in the first few pages, and I really had to place the book down because I didn’t like the way one of the characters treated another! lol. When I got over myself and reminded myself that it was just fiction I delved in and couldn’t place it down again.
The book is called The Silent Governess by Julie Klassen
Mr. C laughed at me as I was explaining the tale of Miss Keene as she fleed from her evil father unto a beast of a man Edward who reminded me a lot of the Beast from Beauty and the Beast. Of course his affections lay else where because of his status and pride in his position. He has had Olivia trapped at his estate because he believes she will sell his secret she accidently overheard while trying to flee to her destination. Surprisingly some godly advice and forgiveness can go a long way.
On the back it says:
Olivia Keene is fleeing her own secret. She never proposed to hear his.
But now that she has, what is Lord Bradley to do with her? He cannot let her go, for were the truth to get out, he would lose everything-his reputation, his inheritance, his very home.
He gives Miss Keene small choice but to accept a post at Brightwell Court, where he can make certain she does not spread what she heard. Keeping an eye on the young woman as she cares for the children, he finds himself drawn to her, even as he struggles against the growing attraction. The clever Miss Keene is certainly hiding something.
Moving, mysterious, and romantic, The Silent Governess takes readers inside the intriguing life of a nineteenth-century governess in an English manor house where all is not as it appears.
I loved the setting in England, and the characters were all lively enough to make impressions. Mr. Tugwell who was a widow of 3 boys who was kind and interested in Miss Keene in a non-parson type way, or Felix – Edwards rogue of a cousin who couldn’t settle on anything. Not to mention all the women in this book that livens up the book with their culturally rich background, and of course I can not forget Mr. Croome who is the gateskeeper for the Brightwell estates… or is he? These lively characters remind me that having a rich culture happens to the best of us and that God uses our own curcumstances to bring us closer to Him.
I’m worried I stayed up until One in the morning reading this tasty book and didn’t even end it! It’s honestly long at 440 pages, but kept me turning with sheer enjoyment.
This romantic book will have you wishing you were a genteel lady of sorts (with a bit of spunk!).
Thanks to my friends at BethanyHouse for sending me a review copy of this tasty book!

I like mystery tales and that is one thing that caught my eye about this book. Two different mysteries in one book! The mystery of Olivia Keene. Who is she really, and what became of the “intruder” in her home, who was hurting her mother, that she whacked over the head and presumably killed, and he flight to get to safety. The mystery of who Lord Edward Bradly is, and why his name is so familiar to Oilvia.
Olivia runs to escape the potential dangers after she whacks a name, who she thinks is her father, over the head when he is choking her mother, fearing for her own life when the authorities find out what happened. She runs through the forest and through an exciting chain of events, finds herself in Arlington in Eliza Ludlow’s shop. Eliza tells her about a huge ball at Brightwell Court. The name sounds very familiar to Olivia, and she is curious. She decides to sneak in just to take a peak and maybe find out what is so familiar about the Brightwell name. She gets caught (of course *smile*) because she was in the incorrect place at the incorrect time and had overheard a conversation between Lord Brightwell and his son Lord Bradly.
Lord Brightwell and Lord Bradly have secrets of their own.
Olivia was taken to jail for the night, only to be place in a cell with another prisoner who choked her just like her father had done to her mother. She is taken to the doctor. She can’t speak but he believes she will be Ok in time. She must stay on at Brightwell court until Lord Bradly knows what she overheard.
There is so many exciting events happening I can’t start to tell about all of them. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, some new clue popped up and I wasn’t so sure.
This book was very fascinating. At times very hard to place down. 440 pages of past fiction/mystery, with book group discussion questions. Defiantly on to read again!

This was my first time reading Julie Klassen’s work, but there will be more to come, as I have her first two novels sitting on my shelf just waiting to be read. I don’t know why I’ve waited so long to give her books a try, because I absolutely fell in like with her characters in The Silent Governess.
Olivia Keene is running for her life when we first meet her, and she’s harboring a very self-incriminating secret that could very well cause harm to befall both her and her mother if it’s ever made public. As Olivia is on the run, she overhears another secret, and this it her in lockup. Fortunately, Lord Bradley sees fit to have her unrestricted and brings her to Brightwell Court, he hires her an under nurse for his niece and nephews. Olivia quickly falls in like with her charges, and makes reasonably a few new friends during her employment.
Lord Bradley, Edward, knows that Olivia is hiding something, and he has his suspicions as to what it might be. But, he has enough problems trying to find out the particulars of his own potentially life-changing secret, while doing his best to keep it under wraps. Edward’s father, Lord Brightwell, isn’t very cooperative with sharing what he knows, so Edward decides to find out what he can on his own.
The Silent Governess revolves around multiple mysteries…family tree secrets, mysterious blackmail letters, and missing family tree members are just the beginning. I painstakingly loved the quick-paced flow of the tale. The characters were really simple to get to know, and I fell in like with Olivia right from the beginning. Audrey and Andrew are real sweethearts. Edward was a small hard to get close to, but he was one of my favorite characters by the end. If you like Regency Romance, then you will really delight in this book. Regencies aren’t something I normally read, but I’m glad I took the time to read Olivia’s tale.

I’ve never bothered to stop and write a review of a book—thinking that, while a name may like vanilla, a name else may prefer chocolate. But, this book is a must read. I’ve read Ms Klassen’s “The Apothecary’s Daughter” and loved it…it led me to want to read more of her books. I chose “The Silent Governess” next and I simply couldn’t place it down. It was pure captivating enjoyment. I hope Ms Klassen finds many more books within herself and shares them!
