A billionaire many times over, with estates around the world, a fleet of yachts, and a life that is the stuff of fantasies, the revered financial wizard made his chance tending the nest eggs of ordinary people—the elderly, blue-collar workers, tiny charities, and effective families struggling to make a better life for themselves and their children. Despite the stock market’s terrifying collapse, the Brooksteins’ glamorous lifestyle of Palm Beach polo tournaments and G5 jets remains unconcerned—until the day Lenny goes sailing from their Nantucket beach estate and never comes home. When his abandoned yacht is establish far out at sea, Grace is devastated. Lenny was her world. She has no thought that his disappearance is just the beginning of a dark, terrifying nightmare of murder, lies, greed, and treachery that will shatter her life and ruin everything she has ever known. . . .
Before she can start to grieve, the shocking news breaks that the $75 billion invested in Quorum, Lenny’s hedge fund, is gone—and everyone believes that Grace has stolen the money. Overnight, the delicate beauty who was once the toast of well-heeled society has become a reviled modern-day Marie Antoinette, alone and power-less to stop her infamous fall.

I can’t figure out why the Sheldon family tree has the gall to place Sidney Sheldon’s name on this trash unless they were bought off. This tarnishes Sidney Sheldon’s reputation as a real mastermind in the thriller genre.

Bottom line: This was disappointing.
I saw Sidney Sheldon’s name on this novel and thought, now that could be a really excellent novel. What it is, is pretty-much chick-lit masquerading as a mainstream thriller. It’s like a soap opera converted into novel format. Putting Mr. Sheldon’s name on the take in is not exactly straightforward nor accurate. As one editorial reviewer implied, if you’re a Sidney Sheldon fan, you will find only “tenuous” relations to his novels.
I reflect this novelist, who has a few published chick-lit novels to her credit, is growing in skill, based on my cursory review of her additional books, but she still has a ways to go, if she wants to break into mainstream fiction. She needs to purge herself, if I may say so, of her tabloid trappings.
Her prologue is pretty excellent; it caught my interest. But the first five chapters dragged. I establish myself asking, Okay, when will the tale start? It starts, or should, around chapter six. The first five chapters could have been advantageously cut completely (with the necessary back tales and character building info fed into the tale as it goes forwards).
I must add one additional criticism: the characters. I could nearly say, with a few possible exceptions, that everyone in the novel is a villain except the angelic, sweet, honest and naïve heroine Grace, soon to be tough-girl Grace. More than that, several of the characters I didn’t just dislike them; I detested them. To call them “not nice” people is to honor them–in additional words, I didn’t want to be around them. Terrible case of the “uglies.” We meet them at the party in chapter one, as the leader, employing omniscient viewpoint, hops from one character’s head to the additional to give the reader looks inside their minds. There’s the expected Hollywood starlet name-dropping (Brad and Angelina, of course), the emphasis on fashion and the insanely expensive apparel, and the over the top riches. But the people! Rampant malice and sordid details.
Back to giving the leader her due: She does several things well. The dialogue seems authentic. She can write dramatic scenes. The plot is well conceived. There is a excellent twist at the end. There are passages that are captivating to read. And, there is character growth that is particularly seen in Grace–although it’s a bit too quick and miraculous a transformation, I reflect.
But the quality of the writing in inconsistent, the point of view in inexpertly handled, and the overall structure needs work.

Very excellent book, but not up to the ones that he wrote before he died.

Another fantastic book by Tilly Bagshawe in the Sidney Sheldon collection. The US has gone into a major financial decline and Grace Brookstein and her spouse Lenny are beling blamed for using the “small people” to get to the top. Lenny was a hedge fund leader on Wall Street when supposedly $18 Billion disappears. Then Lenny dies in a boat manufacturing accident. Grace is to blame ???? Read it and find out.

What a fantastic book! I just couldn’t place it down until I finished. I factually read it in one day. There was a strong storyline, with well-developed characters. The scenes were described well lacking being overbearing. I usually figure out the ending of books, but didn’t see this one coming…what a surprise! I highly recommend this book.
