Product Description
Urban sewing lounges and stitch-centered nuptial showers point to the rebirth of sewing. A new generation has finally selected up needle and thread, and they’re ready to sew. And why not? With a basic machine and a small know-how, crafters can make stylish and utterly distinct items.
In Sew & Stow: 30 Fun Projects to Carry, Hold, and Organize Your Stuff, Your Home, and Yourself!, Betty Oppenheimer, an avid crafter and sewer, shares 30 of her favorite patterns, including functional items for the home, workshop, camp, and garden. From aprons to hammocks, and from lunch totes to laundry bags, Oppenheimer’s projects will help crafters get organized and help the planet with a wide assortment of reusable totes, carry-alls, and shopping bags.
Oppenheimer includes fuss-free patterns for everyday necessities, as well as one-of-a-kind items not regularly establish in sewing books — a log tote for a strapping lumberjack, a stadium seat for the sports enthusiast, and a dog bed for that favorite furry friend. Her projects will appeal to novice and practiced crafters alike; each pattern includes step-by-step instructions and illustrations, and each can be concluded in just a few hours. Projects are open with fresh, contemporary fabrics, and are sure to delight even the most trendsetting crafter. With Oppenheimer’s help, anyone can turn a swatch of fabric into a practical — and eye-catching — item that can be used again and again.
Sew & Stow includes everything today’s sewer needs to go beyond the mass produced, and to make items that are functional, fabulous, and ecofriendly!

I couldn’t find this book at a local store to preview before buying, so I had to order it through amazon. I was looking forwards to a fun project book to make a bag or two, because I delight in building bags for myself and friends, and with a title like SEW & STOW I figured there would be at least a few fun projects. But I was pretty disappointed after getting the book and paging through it the first time.
First, a hammock and a shower curtain are not items with which you can “carry, hold, or organize” things, so I have no thought why they are included in the book. I also felt the after swim wrap, cozy cushion take in, best bedroll ever, and doggone cozy pad were rather out of place in this book. So, nearly half of the projects were not projects I was looking or hoping for in a book like this.
I am not a super beginner sewer, but I guess I would classify myself as a “late beginner” so I did appreciate the chapter on “techniques and tools for cutting, sewing, and finishing” because I learned a few things that additional books glossed over (or that I had glossed over!).
As to the patterns themselves, I don’t reflect they were anything new or revolutionary, which is fine. They were at a level that I could follow, which is fantastic, but overall I’m disappointed with the buy because so few of the patterns are something I really want to make.

This book presents creative thoughts that no additional source starts to take in. It is unique for its projects and I refer to it nearly weekly. I am a sewing instructor at a local sewing machine and fabric shop. My students appreciate new, different thoughts for projects and this is one of my primary sources for them. It is very useful for thoughts to challenge their sewing skills.
