Separation of Church & State: What the Founders Meant
Where to buy Separation of Church & State: What the Founders Meant books online?
Product Description
This book provides a simple and much-needed analysis of one of the most regularly used and widely misunderstood phrases in American history. Learn the Founding Fathers’ views on the positive influence of religious values on public policy as well as the background behind Thomas Jefferson’s legendary 1802 letter employing the “separation of church and state” axiom. Significantly, for more than a century and a half after its introduction, courts correctly interpreted Jefferson’s axiom as a mandate to protect Christian expressions in the public square, and only in recent years has the axiom been remade into a judicially-enforced policy of public secularism. This book offers an engaging and simple to read overview of one of the greatest public policy debates in contemporary America.

This book is absolutely terrible. Barton gives extremely weak points which are easily countered, commits copious logical fallacies, and provides beside the point information on the theme. He twists the meaning of Jefferson’s “wall of separation between Church and State” by adage it would only provide security against governmental interference with religious expression. This is a blatant lie. Jefferson never said anything like this. He believed lacking a doubt that the separation would protect both church and state.
Barton also asserts that since prayer was removed from school, issues like teenage pregnancy have increased. First of all, students have permanently been allowed to pray in school. It is the teachers who cannot promote or practice religion with their students. Also the the Equal Access Act is is still upheld. Second, I am utterly confused how Barton can blame society’s problems on a lack of required prayer in schools. Would it make sense for me to say that life-expectancy has increased because of the removal of required prayer in schools??
These are only a couple of the poorly thought out explanations of what the founders meant in the First Amendment. If you want a book that describes easily refuted myths about separation of Church and State by a right-thinker, go for it. I bought this book to better know the Religious Right’s arguing points on the theme but have been extremely disappointed. This book would truly be a disgrace to Barton’s god.

Barton nearly comically makes his history from manipulation. Here are two notable critics: A recent review of Barton’s work on a podcast by Clay Jenkinson, one of the first winners of the nation’s highest award in the humanities, the Charles Frankel Prize. When commenting on the past accuracy of the founding fathers, Jenkinson stated, “Well the worst is this fellow from Texas named David Barton, who has written a book about original intent in which he has gone through and falsely combed the founding fathers to get their most Christian sayings and compiled them in this book, out of context – to the exclusion of their broader way of seeing the world, and adage, see – they were all Christians and … Jefferson was a Christian, and Madison was a Christian, and Franklin was a Christian, and do you know what? He is just unadorned incorrect and a fraud. And he has been shown to be a fraud.” Jenkinson concludes by adage Barton’s work “is fake, malicious, and irresponsible and it has to be countered. We have to tell the truth about history.”

I was agreed this book (if you can call it that at 20 pages) because obviously I am a sinner in need of God’s grace. It took about 15 mins to read. I know that some of the founding fathers believed in God. I know that society is need of a moral adjustment. I also know that the Constitution does not allow for a government mandated religion or denomination. But, claiming that law must be morally based on the Bible is no different than persons extremists the leader points his finger at.
The founding fathers and the Constitution provide for moral law, not religious law. Pushing Bible doctrines into the law books is incorrect. Hell, Christians can’t even agree with each additional. How are they going to agree on what’s right and incorrect for the rest of us? But I digress… Yes the Constitution grants the freedom of religion for ALL. And while the Constitution is against a government mandated religion, it does provide the freedom to all religions. Liberals who push to have religion removed from everyday life are as guilty as persons who’d like to see Christianity dictate everyday life via Bible-based legislation.

The opinion made in this booklet are terribly weak. Either they are extraneous information that is used as wow-factor filler, or the statements that are really used to support the position of a “Christian United States” are so weak as to be laughable.
It “seems” like a well thought out position since the leader uses so many end notes, but one must look at the actual sources. First, most of these have nothing to do with the “establishment” of our government. Secondly, a lot of these sources come from just one perspective. If you permanently turn right (or left), you just end up going in a circle.
I recommend this book for people who want to see what kind of speechifying the “Christan United States” group comes up with. The reason for this recommendation is because it is really fleeting, and it won’t take up too much of your valuable time.
One might be tempted to reflect I am a secularist – I am not. I am a Christian who has taught children and adults. I do not want, or need, my faith to be legislated. That is the exact opposite of what Jesus was wanting the disciples to do in the first century. It is the job of Christ followers to live out the examples set into the world by Christ and to share the Excellent News – that’s it.

This book is a must read! This is truly where our nation built the foundation to apt the most sought after place to live. Liberal leaders are destroying the very foundation of the truly God agreed principles for laws, truth and morality. If the U.S. continues down the path, we are doomed. There needs to be a repentance of thinking of self and a return to humility and seeking God to be our guide. Look at the financial mess of 2008, all due to greed!
