Product Description
For years, twelve-year-ancient CeeCee Honeycutt has been the caretaker of her psychotic mother, Camille. The tiara-toting, lipstick-smeared laughingstock of an entire town, Camille was a woman trapped in her long-ago moment of glory as the 1951 Vidalia Onion Queen. But when she is hit by a truck and killed, CeeCee is left to fend for herself. To the rescue comes her previously unknown fantastic-aunt Tootie in her vintage Packard convertible.

This is a feel-excellent tale, with an intriquing beginning and a fairytale ending. Sorry to say it is so cliche-ridden and filled with repetitive phrases that it could be used as a model of terrible writing.

You get the thought. I may seem obsessive about searching for all these examples, but they just leaped out at me, they are so egregious. There are also copious cliches, such as: knocked senseless, total strangers, numb with rage, my heart raced, weird as it sounds, flushed with delight, etc. If you like really terrible writing, you may delight in this book. Just the same, I can see how it could make a amusing, feel-excellent movie.

This is not so much a novel as it is a string of vignettes of CeeCee’s life with her mother and then the circle of women who take her in in Savannah. There’s no overall plot and no tension (which makes the reference to The Help kind of ridiculous). CeeCee’s crazy mother dies, she’s taken in by a kindly and wealthy fantastic-aunt in Savannah, and feels loved.
Characters are either wholly excellent or wholly terrible, and there are a number of blatant rip-offs (the sunglasses scene from Corinna, Corinna is reproduced openly, for one). The dialogue is regularly wooden and CeeCee veers from sounding like a child to an adult – it’s hard to tell from what age she’s telling this tale.
I did end it, but if I’d paid for it, I’d have been rather cross. The beginning is the best part; I’d recommend reading honestly far before you choose to buy it.

I had high hopes for this book. I like Savannah and, having grown up in The South, I like Southern fiction. When the book arrived, the take in itself was a tipoff – the art looks reasonably a bit like “The Help” and immediately I wondered if the take in art was meant to somehow cynically manipulate us into thinking of this as a companion to that wonderful book.
You’ve probably already read this book before. Girl tends to sick “momma”. Dad is cheating, boozing loser and abandons family tree. Momma dies and girl moves to gorgeous Southern town, where we read about women sticking together, magnolia trees, and racial tension. But, the leader just skims the surface of each of these, and even an incident on Tybee Island is wrapped up mere pages later, very conveniently. CeeCee’s voice is anywhere from an 8 to a 30-year ancient depending on which page you’re reading. Overall you can’t help but marvel if the leader should have spent a small more time with her editor on this book.
And if the book takes off, it’s certainly destined to become a “chick flick.” I can’t remember one male character who is at all redeeming…. let’s see, boozing father, racist attacker on Tybee… And the female characters are one-dimensional stereotypes of Southern belles and eccentric ancient ladies. Nothing new here.
It’s a quick, simple read. The book reminds me of eating a bag of potato chips – mildly delightful but soon forgotten.

Reviews were excellent and I expected a tale line similar to Anne Siddons, perhaps. Tale lacked punch and humor. Excellent impression of the South for the timeline, but that’s about all it offered. Wish I would have gotten it from the library as a replacement for of buying it.

I reflect its a small over priced but it came to me when I needed a feel excellent book and it did just that.
