Stephen King’s second book, ‘Salem’s Lot (1975)–about the slow takeover of an insular hamlet called Jerusalem’s Lot by a vampire patterned after Bram Stoker’s Dracula–has two fundamentals that he also uses to excellent effect in later novels: a tiny American town, usually in Maine, where people are disconnected from each additional, quietly nursing their potential for evil; and a mixed bag of rational, goodhearted people, including a writer, who band together to fight that evil.
Simply taken as a contemporary vampire novel, ‘Salem’s Lot is fantastic fun to read, and has been very influential in the horror genre. But it’s also a sly piece of social commentary. As King said in 1983, “In ‘Salem’s Lot, the thing that really frightened me was not vampires, but the town in the daytime, the town that was empty, knowing that there were things in closets, that there were people tucked under beds, under the concrete pilings of all persons trailers. And all the time I was writing that, the Watergate hearings were pouring out of the TV…. They said the book was like new. It was one of persons ancient terrible condition library books. I do not recommend buying from them at all. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!!

This book is the absolute worst “horror” book to ever be published. My father has gotten into King’s books over the last few years so I chose to give him a try. HUGE mistake!
‘Salems Lot has a horribly cliched tale line, the characters have no depth nor personality, and the ending is utterly missing any imagination.
I have read many horror books (and movies) having to do with vampires and this was the worst. King took every legendary vampire novel and turned them into his own very featureless tale. If you like vampires lacking the cliche and with actual depth try Poppy Z. Brite or even Anne Rice, but don’t waste or time or your money on ‘Samems Lot.

This is by far the absolute worst book I have ever had the misfortune of reading. The copy I read was 550 pages. The first 500 pages dictated the lives of every single citizen of Salem in soap opera fashion. Very small mention is really agreed to vampires in the first bleak 500 pages. Whenever they (Vampires) do come out to aver a victm, King cuts off the sequence of events lacking ever telling what happened to the unfortunate soul (Ocasionally he will, but 350 dull pages later). It got very very frustrating. The last 50 pages were excellent, but the certianly didn’t even come cloce to building up for the first 500.

I heard so much about Stephen King. I had nothing to do so I read this book. Man! was it dull. No appealing characters. Didnt really scare me a bit. Dull plot. Man! if this is King’s best work, I better stick with, the master of tale telling, the master of the Vampire Chronicles, the real deal, Anne Rice!
