New York Times bestselling leader Nora Roberts serves up a searing novel of explosive suspense and sensual romance as the search for a murderer ignites passion between a gorgeous child psychiatrist and the sexy, brooding detective determined to crack the case.
In the unbearable heat of another sultry Washington, D.C., summer, a serial killer is on the loose. Dr. Tess Court, one of the capital’s most successful psychiatrists, wants nothing to do with the case—until the police convince her to lend a hand to the lead investigator, legendary ladies’ man Detective Ben Paris.
Scarred by his family tree’s history, Ben has even less use for shrinks than Tess has for him—but the forces of animal magnetism and a shared desire to catch the demented criminal known as “The Priest” inexorably erode the walls they’ve built. They’re opposites in so many ways, yet that seems only to fan the flames of attraction for which danger has supplied the spark. To stop a killer who thinks he can absolve sins through murder, Ben will need every ounce of psychological insight Tess can offer him. And she’ll need the help of a lawman willing to stare dread in the face if she’s going to avoid apt the madman’s next victim.Amazon.com Review
For persons of you who can’t get enough Nora Roberts, Roberts has dusted off this romance thriller from the early ’80s, slapped a new take in on it, and republished it. After so many years, Sacred Sins may feel a bit musty, but persons readers just looking for a excellent time won’t mind some outdated attitudes or references when the timeless suspense and romance keep them flipping the pages.
With the talents that later led her to make her J.D. Robb line of In Death romance thrillers, Roberts uses an “opposites attract” theory of appeal between her lovers and firmly places her heroine in the killer’s sights. Dr. Tess Court is a successful child psychiatrist who is guilted by her senator grandfather into advising on a serial murder case. Detective Ben Paris hasn’t much respect for shrinks after his brother’s unsuccessful treatment for post-war depression. But, forces align to place these two together and things turn hot and heavy. As they work to uncover the murderer’s motives, Tess and Ben realize that she is both the killer’s next likely victim and his best hope for a savior.
Tess has all the spunk and determination of a predictable Roberts heroine with a fantastic wardrobe and elegant tastes to boot. Though the killer’s motivations remain to some extent simple, he is convincingly creepy, and this thriller will satisfy loyal fans and new readers alike. –Nancy R.E. O’Brien

That infamous “but….” Sacred Sins is a excellent, compelling read and I loved much of the book, but….
What is Nora Roberts’ fixation with Catholicism, anyway??? I have never, EVER seen a positive portrayal of a excellent, levelheaded, orthodox Catholic in any of her books that I’ve read, and Msgr. Logan of this book is no exception. He is a “excellent, sensitive” man but, of course, he isn’t so “archaic” as to wear clerical blacks or to encourage Ben to reconcile with the Church.
Ms. Roberts is also trying my patience with her pro-abortion politicking in her books. Genuine Lies is probably my very favorite of her novels because of its outstanding plot and characters, but it is also a paean to the so-called “pro-choice” cause. In Sacred Sins, it is the illegal abortion by a family tree member that finished tragically that sends “The Priest” over the edge. And of course, the Church’s teaching on the evil of abortion is what influences “The Priest’s” view of abortion and his murderous attempts to try to “atone” for this “sacred sin.” Pathetic. Try researching the millions of joyful, loving pro-life advocates in this country, Ms. Roberts. They will open your eyes to a whole new perspective on the issue.
Ms. Roberts would be well-advised to either start showing respect for the religion of nearly one billion people worldwide, or to avoid attempting to described Catholics in her books.
Two stars agreed for a suspenseful plot with appealing characters (esp. liked the partnership between Ben and Ed). Three stars withdrawn for the gratuitous slams on Catholicism and the pro-life cause.

So Nora goes Hollywood. If this was my first Nora Roberts novel it may have been my last. If this a new venue count me out. What a major disappointment. Spare me a political message. Do what you do best, romance. What if Ms. Roberts had a loved one who was victim to “the preist” would she feel so compassionate? How outrageous!

This is the first of Robert’s books that I’ve read . I liked the characters and the plot was suspensefull but I felt that the characters relationship could’ve been done better. I didn’t like the ending much either, I was expecting more of a “WOW!” feeling after finishing the book but I felt more of a “Eh, excellent book” feeling. I recommend it but there were certain slow chapters that I thought could’ve been left out all together. Overall though…it was pretty excellent.

This review is for the revised Bantam paperback edition, August 2001. SACRED SINS was on the USA Today top 150-bestseller list in August and September 2001, peaking at position eight.
SACRED SINS is a suspense thriller with a touch of mystery and a romantic subplot. Dr. Tess Court, a young, attractive child psychiatrist, is chosen to help Detective Ben Paris, a handsome unattached detective, in finding a deranged serial killer. Paris doesn’t reflect a psychological profile of the killer will be helpful, but he finds the physical profile of Tess irresistible. Throughout the tale, the push and tug between Tess and Ben examines the treatment versus punishment of criminal dementia.
In SACRED SINS, the leader switches amongst multiple points of view lacking separators, occasionally having two points of view in the same paragraph. At times, I establish this confusing and hard to follow. Otherwise, this tale is well written and engaging.
