Product Description
The master of the new noir, Dennis Lehane brilliantly interweaves beauty and violence, integrity and evil in this thrilling, powerfully resonant novel.
A gorgeous, grief-stricken woman has vanished lacking a trace. So has the detective hired to find her. And a lot of money. Enter saavy, tough-nosed private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. Rooted in the no-nonsense streets of Boston’s blue-collar Dorchester, they’ve seen it all—and survived. But this case leads them into unexpected territory where nothing is sacred—a land of lies and corruption where trusting anyone could get them killed . . . where taking any step could be their last.
Amazon.com Review
Dennis Lehane won a Shamus Award for A Drink Before the War, his first book about effective-class Boston detectives Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro. His second in the series, Darkness, Take My Hand, got the kind of high octane reviews that careers are made of. Now Lehane not only survives the dreaded third-book curse, he beats it to death with a stick. Sacred is a dark and treacherous updating of Raymond Chandler’s The Huge Sleep, as dying billionaire Trevor Stone hires Kenzie and Gennaro to find his daughter, Desiree. Patrick’s mentor, a wonderfully devious detective named Jay Becker, has already disappeared in St. Petersburg, Florida, while effective the case, so the two head there to pick up a trail. Desiree, of course, is nothing like the sweet and simple beauty described by her father, and even Chandler would have been amazed by the plot twists that Lehane manages to keep coming.

I read Lehane’s first two books and loved them immensely. But Sacred was so terrible that I am very mad that I wasted several hours reading it. The plot seemed to be an afterthought to the smart-aleck, wisecracking dialog of Kenzie. I was also turned off by the condescending place-downs of Florida. Lehane’s provincial worship of Boston detracts from his tales.

I wanted to like this book. I really did. Mr. Lehane has a excellent reputation and I have loved the two movies I have seen made from his novels. In the end, though, I just didn’t like this novel.
Sacred is the third book I have read in Lehane’s private eye series featuring Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. Sorry to say, it will also be the last.
The novel opens with an improbable situation and then skips along to several unbelievable characters and developments, from the convicted felon arms dealer who rigs his own Boston house with pressure sensitive explosive booby traps, to the flawlessly gorgeous evil mastermind, to the cardboard cops dug out of a Crackerjack box.
The plot was silly and the characters so cliched as to be amusing, even when they weren’t meant to be.
It’s obvious Mr. Lehane hasn’t spent much time with real private investigators or cops.
I did like Lehane’s Shutter Island, everything except for the ending, which I establish hopelessly confusing. I’ve heard the speech for the movie has a better wrap-up.
The bottom line: Sacred is a waste of time.

Not much tale to clarify, just alot of poorly stuck pieces. A carpet natural fiber with silly string. I was pleased to see I’m not alone in my disappointment with this fantasy rendition. But, I see some who liked it, but thank goodness for Spencer and Hawk Boston will remain. Bubba Rogowski, indeed. I felt Lehanes beginning statement that he saw no tale here was an extremely accurate one, the friends who said otherwise were not. No, Elvis Cole here, only a foulmouthed crybaby, with a bimbo for a partner and an imprisoned scuzzball lowlife as a friend. “Baby I’m gone”, too many fantastic writers await and time is too fleeting.I suggest Lehane use his creative writing degree and apply it toward fantasy science fiction, or comic books.

I guess a lot of people didn’t like this book very much. This is the fourth novel by Dennis Lehane I have read and I have to say- I like it the best of any of them. I really didn’t like A drink before the war or Darkness take my hand much. I certainly got caught up in the tale and loved his style of writing- but I liked the tale line of this book a lot better. Gone baby gone was my favorite before- but now I reflect this might be the best. Lehane’s writing is so excellent- his characters are permanently super complex and appealing- you can’t help but become engrossed. Another plus for me- this book was probably the least grusome of what I’ve read so far and I liked that- I sometimes have a hard time reading through the descriptions of crimes committed by the villains. I was certainly pleasantly surprised with how excellent this book was.

A huge fan of Lehane, I was LOVING this book in the beginning, thinking to myself what a fantastic choice I had made buyingit. It was appealing, amusing, etc and seemed to be leading to a very compelling mystery to solve. Midway thru the book, things got a bit vague as I was not able to figure out how some of the various happeneings connected with each additional, but I was relieved when the 2 main charachters, Patrick and Angie, were also questioning the events themselves, not knowing what to make of them. Expecting things to come together from that point on and become a bit more all ears, the plot got even more convoluted. I nonstop reading for the hell of it but I have finished the book and still not sure who was proposed dead in the car “manufacturing accident” (Trevor or his wife?) as well as who was really after who. When Jay Becker returned from Nantucket and knew Desiree was alive, Trevor then sent him to Florida to find her and kill her. Why would Jay accept an assignment to kill? He was one of the “excellent guys”, right? In addition, a few holes were left in the plot (eg. when the “Weeble” and the chaffeur (I reflect his name was Cushing) were killed on the bridge in Florida, the police search reported they were residents of Atlanta ,(NOT employed by Trevor) and that their neighbors had seen the nearly every day. Yet earlier in the book the Weeble was certainly part of Trevors
squad of cronies- this was never cleared up.. I was left reasonably frustrated by this book and because of it may never read Lehane again. Anyone agree?
