When television viewing audiences first met Ruby Gettinger, a mild-mannered, sweet-natured, Southern-food addicted Sunday school teacher, her weight was floating near 500 pounds. As the ad battle for the show says, Ruby doesn′t know how she got to this weight, but she knows its killing her. Having been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and told by doctors that she would die if she nonstop to carry all that weight, Ruby is changing her life to save it. Her honesty, optimism and genuine commitment to uncover all the underlying causes of her addiction–mental, physical and emotional–are inspiring millions of others in the process. So too is her progress. (She′s now down to 360 pounds!)
While Style′s cameras have been following Ruby′s personal journey as she sheds the weight, gets in excellent health, battles discrimination daily, and struggles to recover lost childhood memories, these excerpts, taken from the journal Ruby carries with her everywhere on the show, include her most intimate reflections, insights and discoveries regarding her life “before” and “during” this incredibly transformative experience. It also includes her fears, hopes and dreams for life after her goal is realized. In addition, the book will feature thoughts from the doctors, dieticians, trainers, therapists, friends and family tree supporting Ruby′s mission. Everyone following and touched by Ruby′s tale will want to read this book.

Ruby Gettinger learned that thou it can be tough. We do the best we can. Exercise and diet are lifestyles …. not hit or miss diets. Ruby had faced the stares, the clothes that would not fit her …. everyday things in life a “huge girl” would have distress with.
Ruby does talk about using food to fulfill an emotional void. She points out many of the 5 highlights of emotional eating.
1. Emotional hunger comes on suddenly; physical hunger occurs gradually.
2. When you are eating to fill a void that isn’t related to an empty stomach, you pine for a point food, such as pizza or ice cream, and only that food will meet your need. When you eat because you are really hungry, you’re open to options.
3. Emotional hunger feels like it needs to be satisfied straight away with the food you pine for; physical hunger can wait.
4. Even when you are full, if you’re eating to satisfy an emotional need, you’re more likely to keep eating. When you’re eating because you’re hungry, you’re more likely to stop when you’re full.
5. Emotional eating can place behind feelings of guilt; eating when you are physically hungry does not.
America is – and should be made up of different individuals both in shape and in mind. A healthy weight for a person’ proportions are what matter. We don’t need to all be stick thing waifs.

I really loved reading “Ruby’s Diary: Reflections on All I’ve Lost and Gained”. Being a huge fan of Ruby’s t.v. show I loved the book as much as the t.v. show. The hi-lights of the book for me were:
1. The Acknowledgments. Ruby is truly grateful to persons that support her mission; God, friends, family tree and the healthcare community.
2. Ruby’s letter to President Obama. I was really stirred by her words and initiative.
3. Ruby’s courage to take on new challenges and not allow herself to get stuck in a rut.
4. The Christmas Doctor!
5. Ruby is out to save her life and the lives of others. She is an incredible role model and fantastic writer. I look forwards to her next book.

With her weight over 700 pounds, Ruby Gettinger knew she had to lose weight or she would die. Ruby chose to film herself while embarking on her weight loss mission and that choice led to the reality show “Ruby”. While being filmed, Ruby also kept a diary documenting her ups and downs as she struggled to lose weight. “Ruby’s Diary” contains undated excerpts from that diary.
Fans of Ruby’s Reality TV show will like “Ruby’s Diary”. She is a very likable character and that carries on in the book. In it she chronicles not only her struggles with diet and weight loss, but personal issues such as her on and off relationship with Denny, family tree tragedies, vacations, her ability to do more and more as the pounds melt away, and the fact that she can’t remember large parts of her childhood. Ruby seems like a genuinely nice person and you can’t help but want to meet her and perhaps give her a hug. Not once does she sugarcoat her attempts at weight loss – if she’s having a excellent day she lets you know it and if she’s having a terrible day she also lets you know. Nor does she sugarcoat the hardships she’s faced while being morbidly obese. She comes across as being very honest and I like the fact that she wants to conquer The Beast (as she calls it) by weight loss, changing her eating habits, and exercising rather than surgery, even though she knows it will be a struggle. She does not preach about how to lose weight; as a replacement for she sincerely wants to help people conquer their personal Beast, whether it is being overweight or some additional addiction. Interspersed throughout the book are “Rubyisms” – expressions like “uggy” which is when something is beyond hideous and “nerdous” which is adage nervous and nerdy at the same time. Also sprinkled throughout the book are testimonials by Ruby’s family tree and friends.
“Ruby’s Diary” is not an autobiography but a current account of a name struggling to lose weight. Fans of the show will like the book, but even if you haven’t seen the show, you might want to read the book just to meet Ruby, one of the most delightful Reality TV show stars of all time. Very enjoyable.
