Roughing It is semi-autobiographical travel literature written by American humorist Mark Twain. It was authored during 1870-71 and published in 1872 as a prequel to his first book Innocents Abroad. Roughing It follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the “Wild West” during the years 1861-1867. After a brief stint as a Confederate cavalry militiaman, he joined his brother who had been appointed Secretary of the Nevada Territory, on a horse-drawn carriage journey west. Twain consulted his brother’s diary to refresh his memory and borrowed heavily from his active imagination for many tales in the novel.

Amazon.com ReviewThere is no nicer surprise for a reader than to learn that an acknowledged classic really does deliver the goods. Mark Twain’s Roughing It is just such a book. The adventure tale is a delight from start to end and is just as engrossing today as it was 125 years ago when it first appeared.
Roughing It tells the right-ish escapades of Twain in the American West. Although he clearly “speaks with forked tongue,” Roughing It is informative as well as humorous. From horse-drawn carriage travel to the etiquette of prospecting, the modern reader gains considerable insight into that much-fictionalized time and place. Do you know about sagebrush, for example?
Sage-brush is very honest fuel, but as a vegetable it is a distinguished failure. Nothing can abide the taste of it but the jackass and his illegitimate child, the mule. But their testimony to its nutritiousness is worth nothing, for they will eat pine knots, or anthracite coal, or brass filings, or lead pipe, or ancient bottles, or anything that comes handy, and then go off looking as grateful as if they had had oysters for dinner.
Roughing It is informally structured around the narrator’s attempts to strike it rich. He meets a motley, colorful crew in the process; many mishaps occur, and it shouldn’t surprise you that Twain does not emerge a man of means. But he withstands it all in such a relentless excellent humor that his misfortune inspires laughter. Roughing It is wonderful entertainment and reminds you how amusing the world can be–even its grimmer districts–when you’re traveling with the right writer.

i’ve been reading the reviews for this book, and I wanted to offer up my own opinion. I first read this book as part of my high school 11th grade english cirriculum. And as a warning to others, I just wanted to say that reading this book was like watching paint dry. There is no structure, and after a while it seems like your just reading page after page but are retaining nothing. Though there are some very appealing amusing parts in the books, the overall dullness of it all overpowers the excellent. At some points, I wanted to claw my eyes out in despair.
I admit, I do like Mark Tawin, but this is in Noo sense, his best work.
Ones again, this is just my opinion. Read it and see for yourself.

I saw small of the wit Twain is known for in this book. It’s filled with long dull passages about his dirty travels from one place to another. My least favorite Twain book.

The book is in excellent condition, but the font size is so tiny you nearly need a magnifying glass to read it!

Twain here exhibits his propensity to write, and write, and write… As long and dull as some of this book was, I am glad I read it. His adventures are appealing and more than anything it is a time piece; his inflections and nuances of verb and colloqualisms make for a hard read, but it is worth it if you have the time. This ain’t a thriller

Twain’s escapades in the West make fascinating reading.
His encounters with the Mormons in Utah are particularly
appealing. Anyone afflicted with Mormon missionaries on
his or her doorstep ought to bring out a copy of this book and
read aloud the chapter in which Twain discusses the absurd
Book of Mormon. Nobody can match Twain in skewering foolishness
and pomposity dressed up as religion.
