This play was designed to show a lighter side to Hamlet. The thought of using familiar characters is not exactly original and Stoppard fails in all attempts at humour. The play is muddled and seemingly lacking direction. This may be an illusion made by Stoppard but it seems to me to show a lack of certainty as to what to do next.

Hard to judge all the excellent reviews here. This is a silly small book, with no tale, no coherent dialog, and no meaning. Worst of all the jokes are not amusing.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is certainly a book for persons people who like to analyze the text. You really have to pay close attention to what is going on to stay with it. To me, it was really confusing and I couldn’t know why they kept skipping around to different places lacking an explanation. The fleeting, clipped sentences didn’t help either. Half of the time, I couldn’t tell who was adage what. One of the downsides of reading this book is that you have to have read Hamlet in order to know the whole thought of it. I reflect it was an appealing thought of Stoppard’s to write about the bird’s eye view of Ros and Guil, but it was just a small too confusing . I would certainly not recommend this book for a name who looking for a just “a excellent read”. You’ll end up so frustrated by what’s going on that you probably won’t even end it. All in all, I would say this book is something you could miss reading.

I selected up this book with lots of enthusiasm, but I was disappointed. One of the themes in Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” is the presence of excellent and evil in all of us. Just as Claudius (the villain) has some notable redeeming qualities, Hamlet (the hero) displays evil at times. Hamlet’s (arranged murder) of Rosencratz and Guildenstern IS NOT to be admired. Claudius hired them to spy on Hamlet, but they had no knowledge of the fact that Claudius murdered his brother (Hamlet’s father). Some critics feel that they got what they deserved for playing this game with Claudius, but are we missing a crucial point? Except for what Claudius did to get the crown, he is a likable and effective monarch. So why should Guildenstern and Rosencratz have hesitated to this? Rosencratz and Guildenstern honestly wanted to help Hamlet, and they had a right to get stern with Hamlet after the uncalled for death of Polonius. They had no knowledge that they were taking Hamlet to his death in England. (The reason they were agreed was that they were taking him there for sanctuary so Claudius could prevent the Danes from demanding Hamlet’s death or execution for the murder of Polonius.) In this play Stoppard reduces the mentality of Guildenstern and Rosencratz to slapstick clowns. (In “Hamlet” they are ignorant of crucial facts, but they are not stupid.) Also, vital scenes from “Hamlet” with Guildenstern and Rosencratz are missing. I was expecting a play that would sympathize with Guildenstern and Rosencratz, but as a replacement for I saw a play that cut-rate their mental capacity and nearly made their deaths a huge joke. Perhaps this is an appealing study, but don’t place it on your priority list.

Of course, I must start with adage that reading Hamlet is a must to admit the brillancy of Stoppard choosing and developing these two minor players on Hamlet. It was a fantastic thought. The themes of death, illusion and reality and the “masks that we all wear” were insightful, as well as the unique sense of time in the book.
But, it was too fleeting to renovate it’s own depth (it is worthless if you have not read Hamlet) and the right motives of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Their two word sentences in wannabe-Hemmingway-style ongoing to bore me after a bit, the novelty of the game wore off. There was definately an element of confusion on how the Player could see the future, and why. That concept was also touched upon but not examined. Perhaps I am just “missing things,” but in my opinion Stoppard could have done a much better job. It has no merit on it’s own, except for the concept listed above.
I suggest that if you are so compelled to view their tale, watch the film.
