We went to Italy in 2007 and had the corresponding Steve’s guidebook…as did every additional touron in Italy that fall. Don’t get me incorrect the guidebook was fantastic but I sure felt like a dork sitting in a restaurant with 20 additional people who all had the same guidebook. “Oh what does Rick say I should eat here?” Guidebooks are excellent for a all-purpose plot…but we used it a small too much “to the letter” and frankly the experience lost it’s luster. “Oh, Rick says we should go look at this but gee… I’m not reasonably as tickled as he said I should be!”
So in that sense maybe it was user error on my part. Travel should be about adventure, not canned experience IMHO, a guidebook should be bare bones or used as such. On our next trip I’ll probably use a guidebook to lay out the all-purpose itinerary and place it at home to add a small adventure.
With all that said it’s a excellent book. The maps are accurate, the hotel advice was fantastic as was the restaurant info and recommendation.

There are many excellent guide books out there. But, while Rick Steve’s book doesn’t have the glossy pages and all the gorgeous pictures of what you are going to see, he offers something much better, his own personal insights on where to go, how to get there, where to stay, what to see, how to do a walking tour, etc, etc. I just returned from an extended time in Italy. Steve’s book was invaluable.

This is a fantastic book to take with you while traveling. We bought it some time prior to our trip and booked
on hotels he recommend. We saved a lot of money following his advice.
We will recommend to friends and family tree as well.

Terrific guidebook. I permanently travel with Rick’s books now, since I find them to be simply superior to the others. His books take you by the hand to some of the most incredible and wonderful places you can ever travel to. Rick’s guidebooks are updated annually, not every additional year like the vast majority of guidebooks. And, for many of the accommodations he recommends, discounts are offered when traveling with his book.
