Product Description
If you’re preparation your Continental tour, or just heading Europewards and letting the winds of fate waft you this way and that, you’ll want some language help, preferably in a form that doesn’t require an extra set of luggage. Rick Steves, noted Europe practiced and writer of candid, accurate, and entertaining guide books, has a axiom book and glossary that contains the three major languages you’re likely to encounter in ramble around Europe or a trek in the Alps.
For each of the three languages, there are chapters on basic survival phrases, numbers, money, and time, transportation, sleeping, and eating, plus activities such as sightseeing, shopping, and nightlife. There are also sections on phoning and mailing, health and emergencies, and building tiny talk–including the essential section on animal noises (because what’s woof woof to you is ouah ouah to the French, bau bau to Italians, and wuff wuff in German). There are also lists of the animal noises made by humans (also known as profanity) so you can delight in the linguistic color as the man next to you drops his fragile souvenir, or swear like a Roman when you stub your toe in the Coliseum.
The menu decoders are reasonably useful, and, despite the book’s tiny size, it covers most contingencies–from bartering over hotel-room prices to rental-car considerations, interpreting train schedules to discussing medical conditions such as constipation and diarrhea, hemorrhoids and indigestion, body odor and the giggles. The glossary in the back shows the English, French, Italian, and German for each of 1,200 words, and there’s an appendix of useful information, including the European phone numbers for various calling-card operators as well as their international access codes and country codes, a chart of monthly temperatures for each country and a metric conversion table, as well as tongue twisters in French, German, and Italian, to while away the train-travel hours and impress your compartment mates with your willingness to launch into their language and dare to sound like a fool. –Stephanie Gold

Just got this book really and has never spoken a lick of french. I bought it because I plot on doing an over nighter in Paris and figured it would be fantastic to know at least a few basic words….but guess what I don’t reflect I am getting it…LOL Otherwise it is a fantastic reference guide. Tiny enough to carry around and not that bulky.

Any book that tells you how to say “May i give you a back massage” and “I dont have any diseases” in three different languages is definatly worth buying it. Also it has the basics and maybe the more useful phrases like “where is the bathroom” “check please” and the like.

Pronunciation is provided for each word and axiom. And the pronunciation guides make sense. I felt comfortable pronouncing each word aloud, no confusion here!
Rick’s writing style also pushes your confidence level. He knows the travveler might be worried to communicate, but he gives you these small pushes to help you overcome your anxieties. On p. xi, ” … take the time to internalize and place into practice the pronunciation tips. I’ve spelled out the pronunciations as if you were reading English. Don’t worry too much about memorizing grammatical rules, like which gender a particular noun is- forget about sex and communicate!”
Will certainly be taking this book with us when we travel to French Canada this summer!

I like this phrasebook. It is very tiny, but it has everything you need to know in it. The only negative thing is that I wish that it also included Spanish phrases, but if all you need are German, Italian, and French then it’s perfect.
