The tone of this book is condescending. It is no where near the depth and quality of a Lonely Planet series. I would not waste the money.

Rick Steves does a very excellent job of describing things to see and do in Croatia and Slovenia. I will be going on a tour and wanted to choose which side trips to take and things to do during free time. There was only side trip in Slovenia that he seems to have not reviewed (or even mentioned) in his book. Additional than that the book is very excellent and appealing reading.

This is not a comprehensive guide to all things Croatia and Slovenia. As a replacement for, it’s a very in-depth treatment of the parts of these two countries that the leader enjoys visiting. As for the rest of the diverse countries, you’ll need a more comprehensive guide.
If you are interested in a guide to the hot spots on the Croatian Adriatic, this is a fantastic guide. It’s in depth and covers topics (e.g., whether or not to rent a car) that many additional guidebooks snub. But, if you are interested in the Croatian interior, forget about it. The coverage of Zagreb is cursory, at best. Slavonia is ignored. Minus one star for that.
I also knock it down one more star for the unnecessary political asides. This is a travel guide. I don’t need the leader to address me on anthropogenic global warming. If you are conservative, or if you are a devout Catholic interested in a side trip to Medjugorje (not too far from Dubrovnik), you might be insulted by the leader’s condescending tone. If you’re neither, then you probably won’t be bothered by such asides.
This is my first of two Rick Steves buys. I know the leader has something of a cult following. While there is much about his travel philosophy that I find refreshing — I whole-heartedly agree with his theory about traveling as a “temporary local” — there are some problems that stop me from building an unequivocal endorsement of this book. (I’m enjoying the Moon guide much much more.)

I’ve been using Rick Steves’ guidebooks for about 10 years now. His guidebooks are the best out there. If he covers it, it is top notch information. I know our trip to Croatia and Slovenia will be as wonderful as all of our additional Rick Steves trips. The book is well organized and very informative. I can’t wait to go!
