Product Description
The phenomenal #1 New York Times bestseller. More than 1.5 million copies sold. Now available from Riverhead.
This is the groundbreaking work that poses one of the most provocative questions of a generation: Why are American adolescent girls falling prey to depression, eating disorders, suicide attempts, and dangerously low self-esteem? Dr. Pipher posits that it’s America’s sexist, look-obsessed “girl-poisoning” culture-one in which girls are constantly struggling to find their right selves. In Reviving Ophelia, these girls’ uncensored voices are heard from the front lines of adolescence. Personal and painfully honest, this is a compassionate call to arms, offering strategies with which to revive these Ophelias’ lost senses of self.Amazon.com Review
At adolescence, says Mary Pipher, “girls become ‘female impersonators’ who fit their whole selves into tiny, crowded spaces.” Many lose spark, interest, and even IQ points as a “girl-poisoning” society forces a choice between being shunned for staying right to oneself and struggling to stay within a narrow definition of female. Pipher’s alarming tales of a generation swamped by pain may be partly informed by her role as a therapist who sees troubled children and teens, but her sketch of a tougher, more menacing world for girls regularly hits the mark. She offers some prescriptions for changing society and helping girls resist.

perhaps if i was a 18 year ancient female i could know the female mindset in this book.but i am not i wasted 3 hours reading this book for my sociology class, what i brought away was not what females in my class did, i find this book repeating, in fact preaching ,i f i want to hear a sermon i will go to church,if this book is the leader opinion then she is as far to the left as one can be lacking being in the pacific ocean.i am a very liberal person but as i said i dont need a name telling me what to reflect.

Question yourself a question: how many of the claims by Mary Pipher have been supported by peer reviewed research? Check her bibliography. How many books does she cite that rely on peer reviewed research? Take any of her factual claims and check them out for yourself. How many hold up? The truth is that this is feminist agit-prop that fits the “women’s studies” department mandate to try to find a reason for existing. Tell a group of people raised on self-esteem and Oprah that they should be even more in like with themselves. . . and they will respond with adulation. Or try this: teach a class to eighteen year ancient people and clarify that their problems were caused by some conspiracy to place them down. . . and check out how many of them can “tell!”

Book was bought as a resource for effective with adolescent girls. I have only skimmed it but it seems like it will provide helpful insights.

The leader points out problems she sees. Regularly her cures are as terrible or worse than the disease. She longs for and explictly states she wishes to cure the situation with excessively strict parenting and sports.
I don’t see how this is to work. Worse yet case studies from a psychologist are regularly skewed because they see only the worst cases where parents have thrown up their hands.
Less than strictcontrol and sports, one (male or female) needs to see them selves as a valid person. It took me to 26 or so. There are outlets such as zines (independent self-published fan/magazines) that I judge give one a better sense of self, where both girls and boys communicate their thoughts and find a sense of self-worth and value. I’d advise getting a copy of “broken pencil” or doing a search on zines. When realizes there are others out there like oneslef one can accumulate a sense of self-worth.
Even more vital one can communicate with the authors and gain support that way. This seems a far superior method than anything proposed in reviving Ophelia proposes.
