Product Description
What does it mean to earn the Silver Oakleaf? So few men have done so. For Will, a mere boy, that symbol of honor has long felt out of reach. Now, in the wake of Araluen’s uneasy treaty with the raiding Skandians comes word that the Skandian leader has been captured by a treacherous desert tribe. The Rangers are sent to free him. But the desert is like nothing these warriors have seen before. Strangers in a weird land, they are brutalized by sandstorms, beaten by the inexorable heat, tricked by one tribe that plays by its own rules, and surprisingly befriended by another. Like a desert mirage, nothing is as it seems. Yet one thing is constant: the bravery of the Rangers.
In this red-hot adventure, winner of the Australian Book of the Year Award for Older Children, John Flanagan raises the stakes on the series that has already sold millions of copies worldwide.

The book Erak’s Ransom, by John Flanagan, is about a boy who goes to get Erick back from the Arridi. The boy, Will, was an orphan at Castle Redmont who had no last name. Will No-Name is chosen to become apprenticed as a ranger.
Apprentice Will goes with Halt, his instructor, and Gilan, Halt’s ranger friend, to bring silver to the people who hold Erak prisoner. The crew from Erak’s ship came along. As they head off, Will’s friend Horence joins them. When they arrive, they are told that a group of warriors are taking them to a nearby village. They follow the path to the village. The first days seem fine but a sand storm overtakes them and Tug, Will’s horse, gets lost. Will splits off the main group to find Tug. Meanwhile, the rest of the group follows the road to the village. After a small while the main group finds out that bandits have taken the group of soldiers. The main group changes course not knowing whether Will and Tug are alive! To find out what happens after that, get the book and read it.

Like the additional 6 Ranger’s Apprentice books I’ve read in this series, this is just as excellent. This book fills in some of the gaps around the time Will becomes a full fledged Ranger. To read these in order, even though its book 7, you should read this after book 4. But, if you read them as I did you still will not be disappointed or confused.
Like the additional books this one ongoing very strong and stayed that way. The ending battle was fantastic. I laughed at the wit, I shivered with the thrills of characters actions, and I shed a tear for Will’s advancement.
This is one of my top favorite series. Even though it’s written for the young adult, or as it’s located in my local bookstore in the children’s intermediate reader section, it doesn’t read like a kid’s book. The writer is very excellent and I hope to read many more adventures with Will and the crew.
