Riley has crossed the bridge into the afterlife—a place called Here, where time is permanently Now. She has selected up life where she left off when she was alive, living with her parents and dog in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. When she’s summoned before The Council, she learns that the afterlife isn’t just an eternity of leisure. She’s been assigned a job, Soul Catcher, and a teacher, Bodhi, a possibly cute, seemingly nerdy boy who’s certainly hiding something. They return to planet together for Riley’s first assignment, a Radiant Boy who’s been haunting a castle in England for centuries. Many Soul Catchers have tried to get him to cross the bridge and failed. But all of that was before he met Riley . . .

When Jean Feiwel, Publishers of Feiwel & Friends and Square Fish, approached me to write a spin-off series starring Ever’s small ghostly sister, Riley, I jumped at the chance. I’d had so much fun making her character in Evermore that she finished up getting a much larger part than I’d originally plotted. She just kept showing up—usually dressed in some kind of kooky costume and wig—and by the end of the book I was saddened when it was time for her to go on. Though, I have to admit, as excited as I was to get ongoing, I was also a small nervous about writing a twelve-year-ancient, as all of my previous protagonists have been fifteen and up. But once I realized I didn’t have to write a twelve-year-ancient per se (since no two are alike!), that I was only writing Riley, a character I’d already grown to know and like, the tale took off from there. Alternative up right where we left her in Evermore—on the additional side of the bridge, firmly ensconced in a place called the Here & Now, and surprised to learn that it’s not exactly the eternity of harp lessons and cloud lounging she’d envisioned. She’s got a job as a Soul Catcher, a guide named Bodhi who is as nerdy as he is intriguing, and a pretty terrifying first assignment she’s not entirely sure she can handle. . . Writing Radiance was the most fun I’ve ever had writing.

As a publisher, I read a lot. So I’m permanently on the lookout for a book that has an leader’s special voice, a memorable tale, an irresistible character. When I first read Alyson Noël’s Immortals series (which at that time was only Evermore and Blue Moon), I loved Ever and Damen, but I really fell for Ever’s younger sister, Riley. Here was a character who was a real scene-stealer: sassy, right, real (and yes, well, dead). I wanted to know more about Riley. I approached Alyson through her Immortals editor and agent, so as to be respectful of her writing schedule and prior publishing commitments. She was enthusiastic and gracious, and the editing process has been fun (!) and gratifying. Alyson is a rare person: a dedicated and talented writer, and a caring and spiritual person. I’m so lucky to have Radiance on our Square Fish list and to have Alyson Noël in my life.

Radiance is an awesome read!
When I first read Evermore, the one person that really hooked me was Riley. So awesome she was agreed her own series. It’s intriguing to learn how she deals with the additional world. Fleeting but sweet yet engaging.
I loved the pages and the jacket flap. But most of all I loved Riley. Keep ‘em coming, Alyson!!

Radiance is the first book in a new series. It is a spin off of Ms Noël ’s The Immortals. If you’ve read that series you’ll be familiar with Riley, she is Ever’s younger sister.
I have yet to read the Immortals series, but I do have Evermore on my shelf. One of the things I learned and loved about this new book is that you don’t need to read The Immortals books to delight in it.
This was my first time reading a book by Alyson Noel and I wasn’t sure I’d like this one. But I was captivated by this take in and really wanted find out the girl’s (Riley) tale. It finished up being a very enjoyable read. Radiance is fun and engrossing. A vibrant read. An appealing take on the afterlife. Riley is a normal 12 year ancient girl, except she’s dead. While she does have her bratty moments, she is charming character. One that you can’t help but like.
3 Stars= Excellent Read

This review is going to be fleeting and sweet, kinda like this book. Radiance, was a super quick read. I was able to glide through it in no time at all. The plot ongoing out slow and took a small over half the book to get to the excellent stuff, but since the book was so fleeting that really didn’t matter much. Radiance had a sweet storyline about young Riley and her life after she moves on to the Here and Now, and how’s she’s trying to accept that and deal with her early death.
I liked Riley’s character most of the time, although she was pretty whiny. I really liked the thought of the Here and Now. Where are we? “here”, what time is it? “now”. You can be anywhere you want, dressed anyway you want, with just a thought. The ending of the book was a sweet conclusion. Overall this book was just so-so for me. It may have just been a small too much for the younger age group than I prefer, but it was still enjoyable.

Alyson Noël, perhaps best known for her well loved Immortal series about Ever Bruise, has introduced a companion series focusing on Ever’s small sister, Riley, and her adventures in the afterlife.
Riley Bruise lost her life at just 12 years ancient, the victim of a tragic car manufacturing accident that involved her entire family tree. When her parents crossed the bridge into the afterlife and Ever returned to her body on planet, Riley hovered in the middle, confused and a bit lost. She spent time watching Ever live her life, and even entertained herself by peeking in on some favorite celebrities. But eventually, she made the choice to cross the bridge into the afterlife and the next phase of her being.
The afterlife isn’t as different as some may reflect. Riley and her parents, along with her dog Buttercup, live in what appears to be the same house in the same neighborhood, because that is what they chose; everyone is able to manifest anything she or he wants. But, people have the time and resources to pursue their dreams, like art, and some even go to school to learn. Riley likes the manifesting part and walking through walls, but overall she is having distress adjusting; she longs to return to planet and be a part of her sister’s life. So she finds herself in the uncomfortable position of being reviewed by the council. But their recommendations for an assignment really give Riley some hope. She is to return to planet as a Soul Catcher.
A Soul Catcher is one who attempts to help persons spirits who are lingering on the planet plane, refusing to or unable to cross the bridge. Her first assignment is the Radiant Boy, a harmful spirit who has been haunting a castle in England for centuries. Riley is appointed a guide, 14-year-ancient Bodhi, to help her out. At first, she has distress getting along with him, and his nerdy appearance bugs her to no end. But they better learn to get along together, because they have a lot of lost souls needing their help to cross over the bridge into the afterlife.
RADIANCE has a quick-moving storyline with lots going on, urged on by a natural curiosity and fascination for the afterlife. Riley is a wonderful companion for the tale, full of energy and curiosity, with a streak of arrogance battling with a bit of insecurity. Noël has an incredible talent for words, making a rollercoaster of emotions with tickling curiosity, tasty spookiness, overwhelming sorrow and sparkling hope. This new series has an awesome beginning, and there’s plenty of potential for more riveting storylines. Fans will be looking forwards to the second installment, which is due out in the spring of 2011.

Radiance was a sweet book. I listen to audio books in the car, which makes carpool for my two children much more bearable. It looks like a book that my 10-year-ancient stepdaughter might delight in. I like to preview books before I send them to her. This one would be age-appropriate, and the main character learns a excellent lesson about humility and not judging others based on appearance. It’s exactly what a kid’s book should be.
